Description

The Rose 'Jean de Bruges' is a unique modern creation. Its small pink carnation-like flowers bloom in fragrant clusters on a bush that reaches the height of a man. And the gently original spectacle of this flowering is renewed between June and September. This hybrid of the rugosa rose also has elegant, matte foliage in a medium greyish green, very healthy. It will accompany all hedge bushes in a romantic or English garden.

The rose Jean de Bruges 'VEL19druwi' is a creation by Lens Roses dating from 2020. This variety stands out from the crowd and has been awarded prizes in Belgium and Germany*. It is a modern hybrid of the Rosa rugosa that can be linked, for example, to the ancient rose Pink Grootendorst. This rose Jean de Bruges forms a beautiful bush with a relatively upright but wide habit. Its size will reach between 1.50 m (5ft) and 1.80 m (6ft) in height and 1.50 m (5ft) in spread. Its foliage is divided into nine fairly wide, toothed, embossed leaflets in a medium green with greyish reflections. It falls in autumn. The flowering is renewed throughout the summer in successive waves if the soil does not dry out too much. Each 4 cm (2in) in diameter flower comprises numerous toothed petals in a light pink with white reverse. They form round bouquets of about fifteen units. The hardiness of this rose is excellent, below -15 °C (5°F).

The large hybrid rose Jean de Bruges is ideal in a flowering hedge or a large shrub bed. It adapts to all soils that are not too dry and all climates, which allows it to be planted anywhere, even at medium altitudes. It pairs perfectly with charming and easy-to-grow shrubs such as lilacs, mock oranges, and other weigelas. Create a magnificent hedge of ancient moschata roses by combining pink, purple, and white varieties.

Planting and care

To plant your 'Jean de Bruges' rose, work the soil to a depth of 35 cubic cm, crumbling the soil well and placing a bottom amendment such as dried blood or dehydrated horn in the planting hole. Position your plant, freed from its pot, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Fill in the hole and water generously to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate rooting. Also, remember to provide your rose with special rose fertilizer that stimulates flowering.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose but are natural.
