Description

The 'Heidi Klum' rose bush is covered with flowers from May to October. This highly fragrant variety produces medium-sized, very double roses in a cup shape, reminiscent of hybrid teas, in shades of purple to deep pink. A top-notch ornamental subject, it deserves a prime location, such as the centre of a flowerbed, as a stand-alone feature on a lawn, or in a large container on the terrace.

The miniature rose bush 'Heidi Klum' flowers, arranged in clusters of 3 to 5 blooms, come from the floribunda rose, an old hybrid derived from Rosa multiflora and Rosa chinensis. Grafted on a stem, it displays a characteristic habit and will reach a height of approximately 50 cm (20in) in a few years, with a spread of 50-60 cm (20-24in). In double cups, the 8- to 10-cm diameter flowers bloom in successive waves from June to October if the soil remains slightly moist. During very hot weather, flowering is halted. Their colour changes from deep purple to crimson pink and then to lilac with a silvery sheen at full bloom. The petals contain a beautiful rose scent with notes of cinnamon and apricot. This variety has foliage divided into shiny medium green leaflets, which are deciduous in winter and resistant to diseases under good growing conditions. Its branches, highly branched, bear prickles.

Bred by Tantau (Germany) in 2006.

The 'Heidi Klum' rose bush is planted among low-growing perennials or short bushes, in a row along a pathway, near a terrace, or even in a large pot on a balcony. It can also be planted in groups of 3, arranged in triangles. It pairs well with perennial geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), bellflowers (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, snapdragons, foxgloves...

Planting and care

Roses need a sunny location with 4 to 5 hours of sun per day, but they should be protected from the strong midday rays and wind. The best soil for roses is loose, permeable, and rich in humus. They can grow in any garden as long as the soil is well-worked and sufficiently rich, even if it's not slightly acidic.

To plant a rose in a pot, work the soil to a depth of 25 cm (10in), add a base amendment like blood, fish, and bone at the bottom of the planting hole, and position the plant after it’s freed from its pot. Cover the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil and fill it. Water it thoroughly to remove any air pockets. It's essential to water regularly in dry weather to help root development.

Remember to use special rose fertilisers to help the plants bloom. If you want climbing roses to bloom abundantly, bend and tie the branches that can grow up to 1 m (3ft) a week during summer. Each bend will result in a lateral shoot that ends in a flower bouquet. Don't hesitate to use this technique as it can provide great rewards.

In regions with very cold winters, protecting the grafting stock of standard roses (the "trunk") is advisable by wrapping it in a thick winter cover.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These stains are not harmful to the rose but are natural.
