I found it spindly with few branches, very thin and fragile; it seems to be recovering.

Description

The 'Grand Hotel' rose bush is a modern hybrid tea rose with exceptional vigour, which means it can be grown as a large bush or as a climber. Its large, double flowers are a vibrant red with a very pleasant, light fragrance. They gather in bunches that bloom for several months, until the beginning of autumn, in successive waves. The dark green foliage is very disease-resistant. This is a versatile, generous rose bush, easy to grow in ordinary soil.

The Grand Hotel rose bush was obtained in 1975 by Mc Gredy, a rose breeder based in Northern Ireland. It is a perpetual variety, which produces large double flowers typical of hybrid tea roses, grouped in small bunches. The bush has an upright, wide and very dense habit and will quickly reach 1.80 m (6ft) high and 1.50 m wide (5ft) if left unpruned. Trained against a support, it can climb up to 2.50 m (8ft) high. Its double flowers measure 10 cm (4in) in diameter and are composed of more than 41 vibrant red petals. Before fading, they open up to reveal a heart of yellow stamens. Each flower exhales the subtle fragrance of tea rose. The foliage is divided into large toothed, glossy dark green leaflets which are disease-resistant in good growing conditions. The plant is leafless in winter.

The Grand Hotel rose bush has a strong presence and is perfect for large flowerbeds and flowering hedges that it will enliven from June to October. It pairs well with lilacs, mock oranges, or buddleias. Trained as a climber, it will beautifully adorn trellises, pergolas or large shrubs. Choose a blue or white-flowered clematis, or even a white or orange climbing rose to go with it.

Planting and care

Plant your Grand Hotel Rose in a sunny or lightly shaded location. Modern roses are fairly tolerant but do not like excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well-dug and rich. To plant your rose, dig the soil well and put a base fertiliser such as bonemeal at the bottom of the planting hole. Water generously after planting to eliminate air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to aid rooting. Pruning English roses is essential for flowering. At the end of winter, shorten the branches to 3-5 buds above the ground (at the lowest point), choose a bud pointing outward for a more elegant shape. At the same time, remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Prune at an angle above a bud. Deadhead regularly to stimulate the development of new flowers.

Care

Pruning instructions Pruning shrub roses is essential for flowering, and it can be more or less severe depending on the vigour of the rose. At the end of winter, shorten the older branches, choosing an outward-facing bud for a more elegant habit. At the same time, remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Prune in a slanting cut above a bud. Deadhead regularly to stimulate the development of new flowers. For climbing roses: the new sturdy stems can be trained and the old ones removed if necessary. 2-year-old branches are the most floriferous. It is best to reduce the stems that bloomed the previous year to 3 or 4 buds, or to 15 cm (6in). Remove dead wood and remove faded flowers if hips are not desired. Climbing roses can also be allowed to grow freely if there is ample space available.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time February to March
Soil moisture Moist soil
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
