Description

The Rosebush 'Louis de Funes' or 'Meirestif', according to the research director at Meilland International, "continues to shine in the best-seller list" long after the great artist has passed away. Undoubtedly, this magnificent modern rosebush is endowed with an emblematic name and an unusually sparkling colour, which embody the joy of living. Its large cheerful rose is generously adorned with a tangerine orange on an ocher background and is surrounded by a light fragrance. Vigorous and highly resistant, this rosebush blooms early, generously, and throughout the beautiful season. Its roses are set against a beautiful backdrop of dark green leaves.

If modern rosebushes are often criticised for their stiffness and weak disease resistance, the 'Louis de Funes' or 'Meirestif' stands out thanks to its good disease resistance, beautiful foliage, and unusually coloured large roses. This Modern Hybrid Tea rosebush, registered in 1987 by Meilland, has been awarded three medals, including gold in Geneva and Monza. It forms a compact, bushy shrub with a slightly upright habit and rapid growth. It will reach approximately 1m (3ft) in height and 80cm (32in) in width. From May-June until September-October, on deeply veined, wavy, dark green and glossy foliage, beautiful modern roses with a turbinated shape, with 20 petals, 10 to 12cm (4 to 5in) wide, solitary, carried by long sturdy stems, will bloom. The petals have a very vibrant, intense orange, while their reverse side is ocher yellow.

This modern rosebush 'Louis de Funes', with its vigour, elegant appearance, and unmistakably joyful colour, will find its place in the garden in a large monochrome bed, in a hedge, or as a solitary specimen in a well-maintained garden, provided that one appreciates yellow and orange flowers, of course. It adapts to all soils that are not too dry and all climates, allowing it to be planted anywhere, even at medium altitudes. The combination with perennial blue flowers will work particularly well; consider perennial geraniums or campanulas, and to finish the balance, add the white and delicate flowering of a Crambe maritime, baby's breath, or corncockle, for example.

Planting and care

To plant your 'Louis de Funes' or 'Meirestif' rose in a pot, prepare the soil in a 25 cm (10in) cube by crumbling the soil and adding a base amendment such as blood, fish and bone at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, removed from its pot, by covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, fill the hole and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. During dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth. Also, remember to provide your rose with special rose fertiliser to stimulate flowering.

Roses often have stains or may look unsightly towards the end of summer. However, this is not a problem for their development. These stains are natural and do not harm the rose.
