Description

Rosa Parfum Royal is a beautiful shrub hybrid tea that forms perfectly shaped bouquets of highly fragrant flowers. Its large, elegantly turbinated roses in bright pink with silver reverses emit an intense fragrance, both fresh and fruity, with notes of classic rose. They are displayed on lush, dark green, shiny foliage, which adds to its elegance. Its rather early flowering is almost continuous until late in the season.

Rosa Parfum Royal belongs to the complex family of hybrid tea roses. It reaches a height and width of 1m (3ft). Its dark green and glossy foliage is naturally resistant to diseases such as blackspot and powdery mildew. The leaves fall in autumn and reappear in spring. The flowering begins in May and continues until the first frosts. Its very large double flowers are 12 to 14cm (5 to 6in) wide, composed of 50 petals perfectly organised in a whirl. Their colour is a bright and fresh pink with a pearly sheen, but the silvery reverse of the petals is much lighter. Their fragrance is pronounced. The reblooming is excellent.

Rosa Parfum Royal is a superb and easy-to-grow rose. It will look wonderful in the sun, in a large shrub border or in front of an evergreen hedge. It is perfect when planted in romantic-inspired borders and pairs well with the mauve roses of Blue Girl, and Mamy Blue, or the white corollas of the English rose Winchester Cathedral. It is an ideal companion for climbing clematis with pink, white, blue, or violet flowers.

Planting and care

Rosa Parfum Royal prefers sunny exposures, and fertile and moist soils to support its flowering. It will regularly need fertiliser to promote repeat-flowering. Plant your rose in well-worked soil by crumbing the earth well. Add an amendment like dried blood or dehydrated horn at the bottom of the planting hole. After planting, water generously to remove air pockets. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root development.

Pruning is essential for flowering. Shorten the branches to two or three buds above the ground in spring, choosing an outward-facing bud for a more elegant habit. Remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Pruning should be done at an angle above a bud.

Regularly remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this will not hinder their development. These spots are a natural phenomenon and will not harm the rose.
