The three rose shoots are growing very well from day one. The colour is a bit more pink than in the photo.

Description

Rosa Poseidon is a modern hybrid that stands out with large variegated flowers combining yellow, orange, brick, and chocolate. This robust, vigorous, and floriferous bush is adorned with dark and glossy foliage. Its perfectly turbinate roses, typical of tea hybrids, succeed each other for months. They emit a slight fragrance. The flowers are stunning in borders and in a small hedge. They are also perfect for bouquets.

Rosa Poseidon is a recently obtained large-flowered bush rose by Orard. This beautiful bushy and upright shrub reaches about 1m (3ft) in height with a 60cm (24in) spread at maturity. It has a rapid growth rate. It produces strong, slightly stiff, thorny branches that bear elegant, sturdy foliage. The disease-resistant leaves are dark green and glossy. The plant continuously blooms throughout summer if faded flowers are removed. The flowers measure over 10cm (4in) in diameter. They are solitary and borne at the end of long shoots from the current year or emerge from 2-year-old stems. The deciduous foliage falls in autumn and reappears in spring.

With its dynamic colour, Rosa Poseidon is ideal as a standalone plant in a well-maintained small garden. It is also perfect for use in large monochromatic borders, as its rich colour can be difficult to match. It can be combined, for example, with white panicled phlox, red penstemons, daisies, chocolate cosmos, the dark foliage of certain physocarpus ('Burgundy Candy'), or the feathery foliage of bronze fennel. Its long-lasting cut flowers are naturally perfect for bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant in a sunny or lightly shaded position. Modern roses are tolerant, but do not appreciate excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked, not too heavy, and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose, work the soil by crumbling it and add fertiliser to the bottom of the planting hole (dried blood or dehydrated horn, for example). Water generously after planting to remove any air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this will not hinder their development. These spots are a natural phenomenon and will not harm the rose.

Care

Pruning instructions Pruning is essential for flowering. It is done in three steps: 1. Maintenance pruning: regularly shorten the branches that have flowered during the season. To encourage the reblooming of perpetual roses, remove the faded flowers along with their stem, leaving 2 or 3 leaves. 2. Preparatory pruning in autumn: light pruning that anticipates the proper spring pruning. It is not recommended in regions with cold winters in order to avoid weakening the bush. 3. Spring pruning: in February-March, when the buds have developed into shoots 2 to 3cm (1in) long, trim the young strong branches by a quarter of their length. Pruning always aims to clear the heart of the bush and remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. The most vigorous branches, usually 3 to 6 well-positioned ones, will be kept to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a slant, ½ cm or 1cm (0.4in) above an outward-facing bud.
