Thanks to Marina, the quality control and shipping team, the rose bush I received appears to be healthy. Planted between 2 resinous trees, I am eager to see its progress... whether it will take root or not. Note: received with the variety label (essential for identifying the rose bush in all seasons). Description

Rosa Rose Clos Vougeot (Delrous) is a modern hybrid tea rose that is vigorous, disease-resistant, and highly floriferous. It blooms in abundance from May to October, as long as faded blooms are regularly removed. This fragrant and beautifully coloured rose pays a lovely tribute to the prestigious Burgundy grand cru, Clos Vougeot. Its fully double, old-fashioned style roses are a striking red with pink highlights, an intense and rich colour that stands out in the garden. The fragrance of the flowers, as complex as the bouquet of a great wine, has an herbaceous note of ivy. It reveals fruity notes of strawberry and raspberry, topped with a typical rose note, which can be "tasted" in stunning floral compositions.

Rosa Rose Clos Vougeot is a modern bush rose with large clustered flowers. It was introduced in 2013 by the rose breeder Delbard, belonging to the 'Souvenirs of Scented Loves' series of roses. Bushy and compact in habit, it reaches an average size of 70cm in all directions at maturity. It has a rapid growth rate. It produces strong, thorny branches that bear dense foliage with large, toothed leaflets in a shiny dark green colour. Throughout summer, the plant produces 10cm (4in) flowers, composed of over 60 petals. They display an imperfect turbinate shape that is characteristic of its hybrid tea rose category while possessing the grace of old-fashioned roses. The flowers are gathered in bouquets at the end of long shoots from the current year or by those that emerge from 2-year-old stems. The rose will flower continuously if faded blooms are regularly removed. The foliage of this variety is particularly healthy.

Rosa Rose Clos Vougeot gives the adventurous gardener an opportunity to try an unusual pairing with a Vitis vinifera 'Purpurea', or a beautiful variegated Virginia creeper like Ampelopsis glandulosa 'Elegans', for example. It looks stunning in flower beds, in groups of 3 plants, in large monochromatic borders, or paired with white or red roses. It also blends well with light shrubs, perennials, and annuals such as gaura, paniculate baby's breath, campanulas, paniculate phlox, and tall foxgloves. It can be beautifully displayed in front of a boxwood or yew screen, or surrounded by a miniature hedge or a carefully organised maze, as in Italian or French gardens. One can also plant at its base an herbaceous clematis with blue flowers like Clematis heracleifolia, or a Sollya heterophylla in mild climates. Its roses are gorgeous in bouquets, paired with lilies in summer or asters in autumn.

Planting and care

Plant in a sunny location. English roses are tolerant, but do not like excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked, not too heavy, and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose, work the soil by crumbling it and add fertiliser to the bottom of the planting hole (dried blood or dehydrated horn, for example). Water generously after planting to remove any air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root development.

Avoid pruning too short during the first two years.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this will not hinder their development. These spots are a natural phenomenon and will not harm the rose.

Care

Pruning instructions Avoid pruning too short during the first two years. Pruning is essential for flowering. It is done in three steps: 1. Maintenance pruning: regularly shorten the branches that have flowered during the season. To encourage the reblooming of perpetual roses, remove the faded flowers along with their stem, leaving 2 or 3 leaves. 2. Preparatory pruning in autumn: light pruning that anticipates the proper spring pruning. It is not recommended in regions with cold winters in order to avoid weakening the bush. 3. Spring pruning: in February-March, when the buds have developed into shoots 2 to 3cm (1in) long, trim the young strong branches by a quarter of their length. Pruning always aims to clear the heart of the bush and remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. The most vigorous branches, usually 3 to 6 well-positioned ones, will be kept to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a slant, ½ cm or 1cm (0.4in) above an outward-facing bud.
