Description

Rosa Ville de Fontenay-aux-Roses Oralivi combines the charm of old roses with the qualities of modern roses. Its large peach-pink, campanulate flowers bloom on a quartered arrangement. This repeat-flowering rose will bloom until autumn. It is known for its excellent disease resistance. Its lightly-fragranced roses are wonderful in a vase. This magnificent variety can be planted in the garden or in a large pot on a patio or balcony.

Rosa Ville de Fontenay-aux-Roses has recently been introduced to the market by the Orard rose gardens, a family business located in Feyzin, not far from Lyon. It belongs to the modern large-flowered roses, also known as hybrid teas, as evidenced by the turbinate shape of its flowers. This variety was named in honour of the town of Fontenay-aux-Roses, with its rich history of rose cultivation. Rosa gallica officinalis, the rose of apothecaries, appeared in Fontenay-près-Bagneux in the late 16th century. The intensive cultivation of this rose brought fame to the village, which was renamed Fontenay-aux-Roses around 1649.

Rosa Ville de Fontenay-aux-Roses is a repeat-flowering rose that blooms in successive waves from June to October if the soil remains slightly moist. The plant forms a bushy, slightly upright habit. It has a rapid growth rate. It will reach a height of about 90cm (35in) with a spread of 50 to 60cm (20 to 24in). The flowers are 10 to 12cm (4 to 5in) wide, composed of 60 to 35 petals. They are either solitary or grouped in 2 or 3. Their colour is a tender pink with salmon undertones, and their fragrance is subtle. The dark matte green foliage is highly resistant to diseases and perfectly enhances the colour of the roses. It falls in autumn and regrows in spring.

Rosa Ville de Fontenay-aux-Roses will look wonderful in a large rose bed, in groups of 3 to 5 plants, or as a solitary specimen in a well-maintained small garden. This variety adapts particularly well to container cultivation, allowing rose enthusiasts without a garden to enjoy its charm on a patio or balcony. The plant adapts to all soils that are not too dry and to all climates, tolerating both cold and heat. It pairs perfectly with pink, mauve, salmon, and white roses, as well as with easy-to-grow plants such as perennial geraniums (Geranium 'Blue Cloud', G. 'Anne Folkard', G. 'Nimbus', G. 'Orion'), campanulas (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, cornflowers, foxgloves, and phlox. Its flowers are perfect for creating bouquets.

Planting and care

Prepare your soil to a depth of 40cm (16in) by crumbling the soil and adding a base amendment such as dried blood or dehydrated horn at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your young plant by covering the top of the root ball with 3cm (1in) of soil, fill in the hole, and water generously to eliminate any air pockets. In dry weather, water for a few weeks to facilitate root establishment. Provide your rose with special rose fertiliser that promotes flowering.
