Description

The Amber Queen Rose is one of the masterpieces created by the English rose breeder Harkness, combining the majesty of old-fashioned roses with the true qualities of our modern roses. It stands out for the exceptional colour of its fragrant rose bouquets, as well as its sturdy vegetation adorned with abundant tough and shiny foliage, with a flawless resistance to bad weather. Its double roses, of a good size, mix on their petals shades of amber yellow and golden chamois, both warm and very soft, which even the bright sun does not fade. Excellent in borders, low flowerbeds, on the terrace, but also in bouquets.

The Amber Queen Rose 'Harroony', is a cluster-flowered rose created in 1984 by Harkness, it has been pursuing its exceptional cultivar career for over 30 years. The small bushy plant, slightly spreading, with thorny stems measures 55 to 60 cm (22 to 24in) in height and 50 cm (20in) in width. It is well-branched, vigorous, and covered with deciduous to semi-evergreen foliage, very healthy, with small dark green shiny leaflets. The young leaves are reddish. Its flowering is remarkably long, lasting 5 to 6 months in bloom. This bush renews itself in successive waves throughout the summer, its very double corollas counting 45 petals and measuring 8 cm (3in) in diameter, gathered in bouquets of 5 to 7 flowers evoking by their shape and fragrance the old-fashioned roses. The tightly closed buds open into round and slightly open cups, and then produce roses with warm and pastel shades, mixing soft amber yellow, gold, around a tightly packed heart with orange reflections. This variety requires a short pruning in late winter to maintain its compact habit.

Floribunda roses are ideal for creating beautiful small hedges, planted mixed along the edge of the terrace or in small shrub flowerbeds. Combine them with abelias or nandinas, also consider the blue of caryopteris which will go very well with the orange of this rose. They are good companions for paniculate phlox and tall baby's breath. The modest size and vigour of Amber Queen make it an interesting variety for growing in large pots. And its charmingly nostalgic scented roses are moving in bouquets. This variety performs well in warm regions.

Planting and care

Plant the floribunda rose 'Amber Queen' from November to March, in ordinary, well-loosened and drained soil. Roses prefer clayey soils, rather heavy than light. In excessively sandy, compact or dry soil in summer, it is preferable to bury compost, decomposed manure or leaf-mould at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose fears waterlogged soil in winter. Place it in a sunny exposure, or at most in partial shade. Roses are greedy plants, a specific fertiliser application will be beneficial at the first signs of new growth, and regularly throughout the flowering period.

Care

Pruning instructions To encourage re-blooming, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, the stems should be pruned to about a quarter of their length (4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud, so that the bush thickens and the branches do not become tangled in the centre of the shrub.

Overwinter Can be left in the ground
