Description

The Sylvie Vartan Rose is one of the already old polyanthas whose reputation is well established. Flowering and reliable, this great classic of flower gardens is always sought after for the very bright colour of its flowers, which retain their Bengal pink hue even under intense sunlight, as well as for its disease resistance. Slightly fragrant, its double flowers of good size for a polyantha bloom from June to October on a dense bush with harmonious vegetation, adorned with dark foliage. A great classic for borders and bouquets, timeless and very reliable!

The Sylvie Vartan Rose 'Evesylva', born in 1969, is André Eve's first creation, and a success from every angle. This variety, belonging to the floribunda rose family, quickly forms a sturdy, ramified and bushy bush, with thorny stems, 1 m (3ft) tall with a maximum spread of 60 cm (24in). It is covered with shiny dark green foliage, rarely disfigured by rose diseases. Its flowering is abundant and regular from May-June until November if it is regularly pruned and provided with enough water. Its wide corollas, 6-8 cm (2-3in) in diameter, are double, composed of 26 to 40 petals, gathered in clusters of 5 to 7 flowers. The tightly closed dark pink buds open into flat and well-opened cups, revealing a small heart of yellow stamens. The firm-textured petals are a true, vivid and shiny pink, sometimes tinged with mauve on the periphery. The fragrance of this rose is light but pleasant.

Floribunda roses can be used to create beautiful small hedges, planted mixed along the edge of a terrace or in small shrub borders. Combine them with abelias, nandinas, or caryopteris, for example. They are good companions for paniculate phlox and tall gypsophilas. The vigou'r, floribundity, and resistance of 'Sylvie Vartan' make it an interesting variety for all gardens, even small ones, and for growing in large pots. Its uses are varied, depending on the desires of each gardener: in a rose bed, along with white varieties ('Marie Pavie', 'Swanny'), or mauve ones ('Blue Boy', 'Rhapsody in Blue', 'Violette Parfumée', 'Roman Waltz'), or mixed with easy-care perennials like perennial geraniums, small-flowered carnations, campanulas, catmints, or asters. And its roses are so warm in bouquets!

Planting and care

Plant the 'Sylvie Vartan' floribunda rose from November to March, in ordinary, well-loosened and free-draining soil. Roses prefer clayey soils, rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compact or too dry in summer, it is preferable to bury compost, decomposed manure or leaf-mould at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dreads waterlogged soils in winter. Place it in a sunny position, at most in partial shade. Roses are greedy plants, a specific rose fertiliser application will be beneficial when the foliage emerges, then regularly during the entire flowering period.

To encourage re-blooming, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, the stems should be pruned to about a quarter of their length (4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud, so that the bush thickens and the branches do not become tangled in the centre of the shrub.
