Description

The 'Scented Martin' Rose is a floribunda rose that combines several qualities: it is highly fragrant, extremely floriferous, and strongly perpetual. It produces generous bouquets of small double flowers in a fairly vivid salmon pink colour that evolves towards a chamois apricot shade, while diffusing a very beautiful and somewhat unique sweet scent. Its abundant foliage, with a beautiful glossy purple-green colour, is disease-free. It is not very bulky and can easily fit into small spaces. Place it along the edge, near a pathway, in a sunny flowerbed under a window, or in a large pot to perfume the terrace!

The 'Scented Martin' Rose 'Adabaluc' is a beautiful French creation by Michel Adam dating back to 1998. This variety, belonging to the floribunda rose group, quickly forms a ramified and compact bush with thorny stems, reaching an average height of 80 cm (32in) with a span of 65 cm (26in). It is covered with shiny foliage that starts out red and turns dark green in summer, while retaining a purple margin. It blooms abundantly from May-June until October-November if regularly pruned and provided with enough water. The flowers are gathered in large bouquets with a diameter of 25 cm (10in), they are double and about 6-7 cm (2-3in) wide, composed of approximately 30 petals. The tightly closed dark pink buds open into beautifully turbinate flowers in a very beautiful soft and bright salmon orange colour. They gradually unfold into well-opened cups while fading and taking on more yellow chamois shades, revealing a small heart of yellow stamens. The scent of this rose is pronounced, rich in aromas of exotic fruits with a hint of lemon.

Floribunda roses are great for creating beautiful small hedges, planted mixed along the edge of a terrace or in small shrub flowerbeds. They can be combined with abelias, nandinas, or caryopteris for example. They are good companions for paniculate phlox and tall baby's breath. The vigour, fragrance, floribundity, and resistance of 'Scented Martin' make it a top variety for all gardens, even small ones, and for cultivation in large pots. Its uses are varied, according to each gardener's desires: in a rose flowerbed, paired with white varieties ('Marie Pavie', 'Swanny'), or with some boldness, mauve varieties ('Blue Boy', 'Rhapsody in Blue', 'Roman Waltz'). It also blends with easy-care perennials such as perennial geraniums, small-flowered carnations, bellflowers, or asters. And its roses are so fragrant and warm in bouquets!

Planting and care

Plant this floribunda rose from November to March, in ordinary, well-loosened and free-draining soil. Roses prefer clayey soils, rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compact or too dry in summer, it is preferable to bury compost, decomposed manure or leaf-mould at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dreads waterlogged soils in winter. Place it in a sunny position, at most in partial shade. Roses are greedy plants, a specific rose fertiliser application will be beneficial when the foliage emerges, then regularly during the entire flowering period.

To encourage re-blooming, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, the stems should be pruned to about a quarter of their length (4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud, so that the bush thickens and the branches do not become tangled in the centre of the shrub.
