2 standard rose trees, quite tall with slightly twisted stems. I've potted them and added a bit of iron (bought from Promesse de fleurs). We'll see the results in a while.

Description

The 'Global Hit' Standard Rose forms a sort of small tree with a single trunk, and its compact and dense crown is covered with flowers from June until the first frost. The plant is hardy and highly disease-resistant. Its small semi-double roses of a beautiful dark red bloom in large clusters on shiny dark green foliage, which is elegant. Easy to grow and not space-consuming, it is perfectly suited for small spaces, as well as for growing in pots to decorate a patio or balcony.

Standard roses are obtained by grafting a variety (in this case, Global Hit) onto a single and upright stem belonging to a different rose (Rosa canina, R. laxa or R. multiflora), with the graft being done at a certain height, here at 50/60 cm (20/24in) from the ground. In very cold regions, it may be useful to protect the rootstock in winter.

The Global Hit Standard Rose is a creation of Poulsen, dating back to 2006, classified in the category of miniature roses or patio roses. Grafted as a standard, it has an upright habit, a characteristic feature. Its crown is composed of highly branched thorny stems. They bear healthy deciduous foliage, divided into small leaflets of a shiny dark green in summer. Its flowering is continuous from late spring until October-November. Its 4 cm (2in) wide corollas are semi-double, slightly ruffled, gathered in bouquets of flowers with slightly curled petals. Their fragrance is very light.

The 'Global Hit' Standard Rose can be planted prominently, in the centre of a flower bed, among perennials or low bushes, aligned along a path, near a patio, or even in a large pot on the balcony. It can also be planted in groups of three, arranged in a triangle, or as a specimen feature on a lawn. It pairs well with perennial geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), bellflowers (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, snapdragons, foxgloves... Standard roses are perfect for adding volume to beds of bush roses or ground cover roses.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Global Hit' rose from November to March, in ordinary, well-loosened and drained soil. Roses prefer clay soils, rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compact or too dry in summer, it is preferable to add compost, decomposed manure or humus at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dislikes waterlogged soils in winter. Plant it in a sunny position, at most in partial shade. Roses are greedy plants, a specific fertiliser will be beneficial at the start of the growing season, then regularly during the flowering. To promote regrowth, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda and polyantha rose varieties are more vigorous and more floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, the stems should be pruned by about a quarter of their length (from 4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above a bud directed towards the outside so that the bush thickens and the branches do not become tangled in the centre of the canopy.

In regions with very cold winters, it is advisable to protect the graft of standard roses (the 'trunk') by surrounding it with a thick winter cover.
