Thanks to M.P. & E.G., the bare-rooted standard rose received appears to be healthy. Planted near the 'Amica' variety, I am now awaiting its establishment... or not? Just the opinion of an amateur who has successfully planted over 860 different rose varieties in their garden.

Description

The Standard Rose 'Gérard Depardieu' forms a charming little tree, with its semi-trailing crown adorned with magnificent roses from late spring until the first frost. Its opulent, fully double flowers are irresistible, combining a delicate pink colour full of freshness with an intense and sumptuous fragrance. The foliage, highly resistant to diseases, remains decorative throughout the season. Its roses, beautiful in the garden, also last a long time in a vase. Give this standard rose a place of honour, and you will earn the admiration of your visitors!

Standard roses are created through grafting. This involves taking a stem from one rose variety and attaching it to a different rose stem, such as Rosa canina, R. laxa or R. multiflora. The graft is performed at a height of 90 - 100 cm (35 - 39in) from the ground. In very cold regions, protecting the rootstock during the winter may be necessary.

The 'Gérard Depardieu' Rose is part of the Hybrid Tea, recognisable by the beautiful cone shape of their flowers. It is a creation by Paul Croix, worthy of the famous actor and his generous, often showy, provocative temperament. Grafted onto a stem, it has a characteristic habit, and its adult size will reach approximately 1.75 m (6ft) in height with a spread of 80 cm (32in) to 1 m (3ft).  Its flowers are double, rounded, and 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5in) wide. The 30 to 40 petals that compose them are tightly packed and slightly turned outwards. Their colour is a pure and gentle pink. The sturdy branches, adorned with prickles, bear lush foliage that is very healthy, reddish when young and becoming dark green. It has excellent disease resistance. The flowers are singular, carried on long and very strong stems. The plant loses its leaves in winter.

This 'Gérard Depardieu' Standard Rose, with its fragrance, romantic style, and slightly nostalgic flowers, will find its place in the centre of a large rose bed, isolated in a well-tended garden, lined along a pathway, or even in a container on the terrace. Its flowers are perfect for composing highly fragrant bouquets, with peonies or lilacs, for example. Pair it with white roses, for instance. Some light-flowering perennial plants (Autumn Asters, foxgloves, penstemons) are ideal for enhancing its beauty and accompanying it late in the season. To accompany it, consider, for example, Rozanne Geraniums or Pink Penny, Nepeta Walker's Low, and blue or white campanulas.

Planting and care

Planting your rose requires some preparation. Begin by working the soil to a depth of 40 cubic cm and adding a base amendment like blood, fish, and bone to the bottom of the planting hole. Remove the plant from its pot and position it by covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Refill the hole and water generously to eliminate any air pockets. It's essential to water the rose regularly for a few weeks during dry weather to help the roots grow. Use a special rose fertiliser that stimulates plant flowering. Choose a sunny location or partial shade to plant your rose in hot regions.

In areas with harsh winters, it is recommended to protect the grafting stock of stem roses (the "trunk") by wrapping it with a thick winter cover. You should prune repeat flowering roses at the end of winter. If you want to reduce the size of the rose bush, you can shorten it, but avoid cutting it back too much, as this can harm flowering. However, you can thin out the branches by removing dead wood and unsightly branches. Removing faded flowers throughout the summer can encourage even more abundant flowering.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
