Description

The Standard Rose 'Happy Chappy' resembles a small tree with a slightly trailing crown. Its dark green foliage is adorned with a multitude of colourful and vibrant wild roses in apricot pink tones mixed with yellow. Whether in the centre of a flowerbed, along a pathway, isolated on a lawn, or in a large pot on a patio, it will create a joyful and colourful scene throughout the season.

Standard roses are obtained by grafting a variety (in this case, Happy Chappy) onto a single and upright stem belonging to a different rose (Rosa canina, R. laxa or R. multiflora), with the graft being performed at a certain height, here at 90 - 100 cm (35 - 39in) from the ground. In very cold regions, it may be useful to protect the rootstock during winter.

The Happy Chappy Interhappy rose belongs to a family of landscape roses, characterised by a low and spreading bushy habit. Grafted onto a tall stem, it develops a crown wider than it is tall, with a slight weeping habit. At maturity, it will reach approximately 1.60 m (5ft) in height and 1 m (3ft) in width. This variety bears single flowers with 5 slightly undulate petals, measuring 4 to 5 cm (2in) in diameter, generally bicolour in a mix of coppery pink and apricot orange. In hot weather, the orange tones dominate, while cooler temperatures favour the pink hues. They reveal a small yellow centre filled with numerous stamens. The flowers are in clusters and continuously renew themselves on the plant from June to October-November. Their fragrance is light, perhaps slightly more intense in warm climates. The deciduous foliage, composed of small dark green and glossy leaflets, covers long thorny stems. It falls in autumn. Under good growing conditions, with proper fertilisation and watering, this variety shows a good resistance to diseases.

The Standard Rose 'Happy Chappy' is best planted in a prominent position, in the centre of a flowerbed, among perennials or low bushes, in a row along a pathway, near a patio, or even in a large pot on a balcony. It can also be planted in groups of 3, arranged in a triangle, or as a solitary specimen on a lawn. It pairs well with perennial geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), bellflowers (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, snapdragons, foxgloves... Standard roses are perfect for adding volume to borders of shrub roses or groundcover roses.

Planting and care

Plant the Happy Chappy standard rose from November to March, in ordinary, well-prepared and well-drained soil. Roses prefer clay soils that are rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compact or too dry in summer, it is recommended to incorporate decomposed manure or compost at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dislikes waterlogged soils in winter. Plant it in a sunny position, or at most in partial shade. Roses are hungry plants, so a specific fertiliser will be beneficial at the start of the growing season, and regularly throughout the flowering period. To encourage reblooming, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, the stems should be pruned back by about a quarter of their length (from 4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) in late winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud to encourage the bush to bush out and prevent the branches from becoming tangled in the centre of the canopy.

In regions with very cold winters, it is advisable to protect the graft of standard roses (the 'trunk') by wrapping it in a thick winter cover.
