Thanks to M.P. & E.G., the bare-root standard rose received appears to be healthy. However, I am disappointed because according to the labels (one orange label with crossed out "Jubilé"..., another white label with "PAPA MEILLAND" written on it...), it seems that I did not receive the correct variety (expected variety was "Jubilé Papa Meilland" from 2013, received "Papa Meilland" from 1963...) Planted near the "Nicole Calfan" variety, I am now waiting for it to take root...(or not?). This is the opinion of an amateur who has successfully planted over 860 different rose varieties in his garden.

Description

The RNA Standard Rose Jubilee Papa Meilland is particularly perpetual and remarkably fragrant. It offers large classic roses, with a perfect curve, in a fiery red shade with vermilion hues, and with a very beautiful spicy and sweet fragrance. The plant blooms abundantly and regularly, on beautiful dark green foliage that is resistant to diseases. With its very neat small tree silhouette, it deserves a prime location in the garden or on the patio.  Its roses, carried by long stems, are also perfect for creating scented bouquets.

Standard roses are obtained by grafting a variety (here the Jubilee Papa Meilland bush rose) onto a single and upright stem belonging to a different rose (Rosa canina, R. laxa or R. multiflora), the graft being done at a certain height, here at 90 - 100 cm (35 - 39in) from the ground. In very cold regions, it may be useful to protect the rootstock in winter.

The Jubilee Papa Meilland rose Meiceazar is part of the complex family of modern hybrid teas, also called large-flowered roses. It is a creation of Meilland dating from 2015, awarded several times internationally. This variety received the Perfume Award and the Silver Medal in Le Roeulx in 2014, the Hradec Králové Certificate in 2016, and the 2nd International Prize of the City of Nantes in 2018. It is a bush rose with good vigour. Grafted on a stem, it shows a characteristic habit, with a thin and upright 'trunk' bearing a semi-globular crown. The young shoots and young leaves of this variety are coppery red. The mature foliage is dark green, and fairly disease resistant. However, it can be sensitive to black spot disease in humid and confined situations. The foliage colour perfectly enhances that of the flowers. This rose blooms from June to October, abundantly and regularly as long as it does not lack water or nutrients. Its turbinate roses, 12 cm (5in) in diameter, are solitary and carried by long and robust prickly stems. Each one is composed of 45 petals of intense red colour with vermilion hues. Their fragrance reveals notes of geranium, carnation, and white peach. The plant is leafless in winter.

This Standard Rose Jubilee Papa Meilland, with its elegant habit, shining roses, and sweet fragrance, is ideal in the centre of a bed of light perennials, along a pathway, near the patio, isolated in a well-maintained small garden, or in a large pot on the balcony. Its red colour is easy to match with all kinds of flowers in the garden. For example, you can plant penstemons, chamomiles, perennial salvias, catmints, or tall baby's breaths next to it to lighten it. A groundcover composed of silver basket or lady's mantle will perfectly enhance it. Its cut flowers, with good durability, are perfect in bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant your Jubilée Papa Meilland Standard Rose in a sunny or lightly shaded position. Modern roses are tolerant but do not appreciate an excess of limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked, not too heavy, and rich enough. To plant your rose, work the soil well by crumbling the earth and placing an amendment at the bottom of the planting hole, such as bonemeal. Water generously after planting to remove any air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to encourage rooting.

In regions with very cold winters, it is advisable to protect the graft of standard roses (the 'trunk') by wrapping it in a thick winter veil.

Pruning modern repeat flowering roses is essential for flowering. It can be carried out in three steps:

1. Maintenance pruning: regularly shorten the flowering branches throughout the season. To encourage the reblooming of repeat flowering roses, remove faded flowers along with their stem and two or three leaves.

2. Preparatory pruning in autumn: light pruning that anticipates the true spring pruning. It is not recommended in regions with cold winters to avoid weakening the bush.

3. Spring pruning: in February-March, when the buds have become shoots 2 to 3 cm (1in) long, prune the young strong branches to one-quarter of their length.

Pruning always aims to clear the heart of the bush and remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. The most vigorous branches will be kept, usually three to six well-positioned branches to maintain a beautiful habit. Always prune at a slant about ½ cm or 1 cm (0.5in) above a bud facing outward.
