Thanks to the people (order preparation & shipping), the rose bush received is healthy. Planted close to a red callistemon, I am looking forward to seeing its progress...Note: received with a variety label (essential for identifying the rose bush in all seasons).

Description

The Scarlet Meillandecor Weeping Rose (Meikrotal) is a magnificent specimen, which is perfect in a romantic garden or even a city garden. Its foliage, abundant and healthy, is covered with beautiful double flowers in bright red shade, gathered in clusters, from early summer until the first frost. It forms a magnificent cascade that will be noticed from afar. To enhance its beauty, plant grey-leaved plants at its base.

Weeping roses are obtained by grafting a variety (in this case, the Scarlet Meillandecor landscape rose) onto a single and upright stem belonging to a different rose (Rosa canina, R. laxa or R. multiflora), with the graft being done at the head. The branches gracefully cascade downwards. They should be trained on a parasol support. In very cold regions, it may be useful to protect the grafting stock 'trunk' in winter.

The landscape roses from the Meillandecor series have a wide and carpeting habit, while offering abundant and repeat flowering throughout the summer. The flowers of the 'Scarlet Meillandecor' rose, gathered in large terminal bouquets, come from the polyantha rose, an old hybrid derived from Rosa multiflora and Rosa chinensis. It is a plant with good natural resistance to diseases and parasites, with an almost permanent decorative effect and dense vegetation. This rose has a spreading habit and develops long thorny stems. Grafted on a stem, it will reach a height of about 2.50 m (8ft) in a few years, with a minimum spread of 90 cm (35in). The flowers, measuring 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in), are formed by numerous petals arranged in fairly closed cups. Their colour is a deep but lively red. They are devoid of fragrance. This variety develops foliage that is fairly dark green and slightly shiny. It falls in autumn.

The 'Scarlet Meillandecor' weeping rose should be prominently placed, in the centre of a flowerbed, among perennials or low-growing shrubs, in a line along a pathway, near a patio, or even in a large pot on a balcony. It pairs well with perennial geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), bellflowers (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints... Weeping roses are perfect for adding style and volume to beds of shrub roses or groundcover roses. For example, plant grey-leaved plants at their base (Stachys lanata, Artemisia nana, Cerastium tomentosum...). They also look wonderful planted along a pathway, in front of a large bed, or on either side of the garden entrance.

Planting and care

Weeping roses prefer a sunny location (at least 4 hours of sun per day), but sheltered from the scorching rays of midday and strong winds. They appreciate loose, permeable, and humus-rich soils. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose in a pot, prepare your soil to a depth of 25 cm (10in) by crumbling the soil and adding a bottom amendment such as bonemeal. Position your plant, removed from its pot, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, fill in the hole, and water thoroughly to remove any air pockets. In dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to encourage root growth. Also, remember to provide your rose with special rose fertiliser to stimulate plant flowering.

Train the stems on a parasol stake; this will help give the crown of the rose a rounded shape.

In regions with very cold winters, it is advisable to protect the rootstock of weeping roses (the 'trunk') by wrapping it in a thick winter cover.
