Description

Rosa x floribunda Decorosier Calizia is a radiant, floriferous, and easy-to-grow variety of rose. It produces bouquets of small, semi-double flowers in warm tones that range from a deep salmon orange to pale orange, from late spring to the first frosts. This variety also offers very good disease resistance, and its foliage always remains impeccable. Give it a prominent place in the garden or even in a large pot on the patio, it will alone provide exceptional decoration for many years.

Stem roses are obtained by grafting a variety (here the Decoroza Cep Rose) onto a single, upright stem belonging to a different rose (Rosa canina, R. laxa, or R. multiflora), with the graft being done at the top. In very cold regions, it may be useful to protect the rootstock in winter.  Grafted onto a stem, it shows a characteristic habit, with a slender and vertical 'trunk' carrying a globular crown. Its thorny stems bear glossy, well-furnished foliage, divided into small, tough, and toothed leaflets of dark green colour. Its flowering is abundant and regular from May to October-November if it is regularly pruned and provided with water. The semi-double flowers are gathered in clusters of about ten units and are 5 cm (2in) wide. The tightly closed buds open into open cups, revealing a small heart of yellow stamens. The fragrance in this rose is absent. The plant will more or less keep its leaves in winter if the weather is not too harsh.

DECOROZA roses are bushy roses with a spreading habit. They can be used in many ways: as lawn borders, in flower beds, on slopes, or in containers. They can be grown in any soil, in sunny or semi-shady locations. They offer long and exceptional flowering on healthy, glossy, semi-evergreen foliage. Naturally resistant to diseases, they do not require treatment.

This Calizia Rose is a magnificent specimen, to be placed in the centre of a bed of delicate perennials, along a pathway, near the patio, in isolation in a well-kept small garden, or in a large pot on the balcony. Its orange colour pairs well with yellow, white, or blue flowers. For example, it can be planted in the centre of a bed of groundcover roses, alongside catmints, chamomiles, perennial salvias, foxgloves, cornflowers, or baby's breath. A groundcover composed of silver baskets, lady's mantle, or aubrietas will perfectly showcase it.

Planting and care

Plant the Standard Rose 'Calizia' from November to March, in ordinary, well-prepared, and well-drained soil. Roses prefer clay soils rather than light ones. In soils that are too sandy, too compact, or too dry in summer, it is preferable to add compost, decomposed manure, or humus at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dislikes waterlogged soils in winter. Plant it in a sunny position, or at most in partial shade. Roses are greedy plants, so a specific fertiliser will be beneficial at the start of the growing season, and regularly throughout the flowering period. To encourage reblooming, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda and polyantha rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, prune the stems by about a quarter of their length (from 4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud so that the bush can thicken and the branches do not become tangled in the centre of the branches.

In regions with very cold winters, it is advisable to protect the grafting stock of standard roses (the 'trun'") by wrapping it in a thick winter veil.
