Thanks to the individuals (Laeticia for order preparation and Séverine from the shipping department), the received rose bush seems healthy. Planted close to a wall and of the "Mme Issac Pereire" variety, I am now looking forward to seeing its development... Note: Received with a white variety label (essential for identifying the rose bush in all seasons).

Description

Rosa 'Madame Ernest Calvat' is a beautiful bush with an intoxicating fragrance. It blooms until October and the autumn flowering remains exceptionally abundant for an old rose. The flower is a good size, over 10cm (3.9in) in diameter, with an almost round and well-filled cup of tightly packed petals.

This rose is very vigorous and grows tall, reaching 2m (6ft 7in) in height. It is also possible to train Rosa 'Madame Ernest Calvat' as a climbing rose.

This rose belongs to the category of Bourbon roses. They are roses originating from the island of Bourbon (former name of Réunion). French settlers on the island planted roses as fences for their gardens. This practice led to random but very interesting cross-breeding. Bourbon roses quickly won the hearts of gardeners all over Europe with their beautiful scented flowers. The 'Madame Ernest Calvat' rose is a descendant of these (almost) natural hybrids.

Bred by Schwartz in 1888.

Planting and care

Plant your 'Madame Ernest Calvat' Bourbon Rose in a sunny or semi-shaded position, where it will be protected from the strong midday rays. Under these exposure conditions, the foliage will remain healthy. However, if you notice any stained or powdery mildew-infected leaves, remove them immediately. Roses are tolerant but do not like excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well-worked and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose, prepare the soil by crumbling it and adding an amendment, such as dried blood or dehydrated horn, at the bottom of the planting hole. Water thoroughly after planting to eliminate air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth. As 'Madame Ernest Calvat' is a perpetual flowering rose, it should be pruned in early spring after the risk of frost and before flowering. Pruning involves reshaping and aerating the natural bushy habit of the rose. For this particularly vigorous rose, there is no need to cut it back too much. To prune, choose an eye facing outward and make a slanted cut just above it. Take advantage of this operation to remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Remove faded flowers throughout the summer to encourage the development of new buds.

Roses are often stained or unsightly in late summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These stains are not harmful to the rose; it is a natural phenomenon.
