Description

A Cynodon dactylon Lawn, sometimes called tropical turf, is composed of a single small grass commonly known as Bermuda grass, particularly suited to dry and hot climates. Its growth is rather fast and its medium-fine foliage remains green in summer. However, the plant, which is dormant in winter, has yellow foliage during this time of year. Cynodon dactylon also shows good resistance to trampling, making it a good candidate for playgrounds and sports areas. The seeds are preferably sown in March-April in the sun, in any well-prepared soil, including sandy, clayey, poor or even salty soil.

Cynodon dactylon belongs to the large family of grasses, it is a small perennial grass native to African savannahs that has spread all over the world in regions that are not too cold. Its frost resistance is decent, down to -15°C (5°F), but its roots fear excess moisture. Bermuda grass has long creeping rhizomes that can colonize about 1m² in one year. It is advisable to mow it before summer flowering to prevent excessive spreading. Finally, this Bermuda grass is a very rich fodder for herbivores.

Composition:

  • 100% Cynodon dactylon

Product characteristics and benefits:

  • Good density, medium-fine foliage
  • Good aggressiveness, good regrowth ability
  • Very good tolerance to heat and drought
  • Winter dormancy may require overseeding with English ryegrass

Use and dosage:

  • 0. kg box: approximately 30m2
  • Sowing rate: 10 to 15g/m2

In our driest regions, watering once a week can be beneficial to maintain a lush green colour in the lawn. A well-established lawn will be even more resilient and resistant to cold. Cynodon can be associated with other fast-growing ground cover plants such as Phyla nodiflora, Trifolium fragiferum or even Achillea crithmifolia to create an alternative to lawns in dry and non-irrigated gardens.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Sow directly in place in full sun, in March-April, in a well-prepared, weed-free, refined and raked soil. Sow broadcast on the surface of the soil and lightly rake to cover the seeds. Optionally, use a roller to ensure good seed adhesion to the soil. Regularly water with a fine mist to keep the soil slightly moist until germination if it doesn't rain.

Once established, Cynodon dactylon will only need water from the sky. In our driest and hottest regions, watering once a week in summer (15 litres of water/m²) will keep the foliage green. The foliage naturally turns yellow as the soil cools down, in November-December, and then turns green again in April.

Dosage:

  • 1 box of 0.5kg for 30m², approximately 10-15g/m²
