Fargesia nitida Jiu, sometimes also called Sinarundinaria Jiu or Jiuzhaigou 1 by specialists, is a small, non-invasive variety of bamboo with orange culms that turn to plum colour over time. Its compact habit is well-suited for small spaces like terraces and balconies.
Â
Originating from central China, Fargesia nitida Jiu has an erect, slightly drooping habit due to the weight of its abundant foliage, composed of fine narrow leaves. Its growth is relatively fast, reaching a height of 2.5 m (8. ft) in a few years. Perfectly hardy, it can withstand -15° C (5° F) (however, in case of snowfall, remember to shake the culms to remove the snow).
Bamboos are not demanding plants and they thrive in any garden soil. However, their growth rate and maximum height will depend on the quality and moisture content of the soil. Ideally, plant them in light, moist, well-draining, acidic or neutral soil. In terms of exposure, we recommend planting Fargesia nitida Jiu in partial shade, protected from scorching sun and cold, drying winds.
Fargesia nitida Jiu is a non-invasive clumping bamboo. The installation of a rhizome barrier is therefore optional.
A star in Asian-inspired gardens, bamboo suits many styles, from modern to traditional. Planted en masse, it quickly creates small and exotic forests, and its striking appearance adds beautiful vertical lines to modern gardens and terraces. Its fast growth also makes it an excellent plant for managing privacy in crowded spaces. Fargesia nitidia Jiu can be grown in pots, so you can use it on your terrace as a vegetal screen to create intimate spaces.
The presence of bamboo is such that you can plant it as a standalone specimen. In flower beds, it pairs well with many plants. We recommend associating it with purple Heucheras and Ferns in partial shade flower beds.
Did you know? Bamboo flowering remains a true mystery: irregular and unpredictable, it occurs rarely. It provides little horticultural interest and, above all, is considered a bad omen as it signals its death. However, don't worry, as it is a rare phenomenon, and some particularly resilient species manage to regenerate over time.

Botanical data
Cultivated in containers, bamboo can be planted at any time of the year, except during freezing temperatures. However, the best planting period is late summer and autumn, when the soil is warm and rainfall is more frequent. The planting distance depends on how you plan to use your bamboo: for a mass planting, leave a gap of 0.8 m to 1 m (2.6 ft to 3.3 ft) between each plant. For a hedge, this distance can be reduced to 0.6 m to 0.8 m (2 ft to 2.6 ft).
In general, bamboo prefers rich, well-drained acidic or neutral soil that remains moist. It can tolerate slightly calcareous soil.
During planting, make sure to loosen the soil and moisten the root ball by soaking it. You can also add well-decomposed compost and lightly rake it into the surface. Watering should be done regularly, especially during the first year if planted in the ground, and continuously if grown in pots. The establishment period may sometimes seem a bit long, but don't panic!
This bamboo does not spread, so the installation of a rhizome barrier (thick and durable polypropylene film) is optional.
In terms of maintenance, bamboo is not demanding: remember to weed around the base of the plants, at least in the beginning, until the dead leaves form a natural mulch on the ground. An application of nitrogen-rich fertiliser (well-decomposed manure or liquid fertiliser) in spring and autumn can be beneficial.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
