Description

The Pseudosasa japonica is a bamboo with decorative foliage, probably the one that most evokes Asia. It is a moderately suckering and very hardy species, running but not too invasive.

Originating from Japan and Korea, Pseudosasa japonica is a very hardy bamboo, moderately suckering, with an upright habit and drooping tips, grown in dense clumps.

The canes of the bamboo Metake are stiff, very thin, and tender green. Of medium size, it often reaches 4m (13.1ft) in height and can grow up to 6m (19.7ft) in hot regions.

The evergreen, dark green leaves, are very elongated and shiny. Grow it as a solitary clump in the background of a flower bed, in a pot or as a hedge, where you will appreciate the density of its canes.

Planting and care

The Pseudosasa japonica appreciates partial shade, although it tolerates the sun. Avoid excessively dry exposures as it dislikes intense sun and drought. Reserve a shaded spot for it, especially in the south. Plant this bamboo in rich, moist, rather heavy soil that retains water well. Plant in spring in northern regions or autumn in the south. Keep watered in a pot, especially when the foliage is very abundant. This bamboo tolerates pruning well. Slugs can devour young shoots. Bamboo grown as a hedge can be trimmed with shears in summer, typically in August-September.
