Description

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Meroki Twin' is a dwarf variety of Japanese hinoki cypress that is small in size and slow-growing, characterised by its generally rounded habit and beautiful foliage that retains its golden colour throughout the year. This true rockery conifer, which never exceeds 1m (3ft) in all directions, is perfectly suited for ornamental use in small spaces and on terraces. It is a very hardy variety, which tolerates the sun well but only thrives in non-limestone, cool, and well-drained soils.

Reaching up to 50m (164ft) in height in its natural environment, the obtuse false cypress is mainly used for making lacquered furniture and for the construction of numerous buildings such as palaces. This large conifer native to Asian high-altitude forests belongs to the Cupressaceae family.

This small-sized variety, 'Meroki Twin', has an almost globular, dense habit, as well as foliage that is distinctly tinted yellow. It grows slowly to form a dome that is often irregular, sometimes slightly pyramidal, and variable. After 20-25 years of cultivation, it will reach approximately 80cm (32in) in all directions. An adult specimen will measure 1m (3ft) in all directions, after an infinite amount of time. Its branches are covered with very dense foliage, composed of non-prickly scales that are golden yellow when exposed to full sun, but darker green in more shaded situations. This difference in shades on the same plant enhances the charm of this variety.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Meroki Twin' is ideal for rockeries or container gardening on a terrace. Placed in a small garden, its unusual appearance and bright foliage is certain to attract attention. It naturally finds its place in a Zen garden and becomes a magnificent subject treated as a bonsai. As it prefers acidic soils, it can be planted alongside camellias, heathers, and small rhododendrons and azaleas. The structural qualities of dwarf conifers perfectly suit the design of a contemporary or urban garden. With their reassuring permanence, these plants easily shape a bed, mark pathways, and border terraces. The key is to play with volumes and colours.

Tips: Water during periods of high heat as it is susceptible to drought.

Planting and care

Plant from September to November and from February to June in rather rich and deep soil, well-drained, and preferably acidic. It does not tolerate limestone or drought. A peaty or wood-based soil will be very suitable. Choose a sunny or semi-shaded location sheltered from prevailing winds. Soak the root balls well before planting. Add organic matter at planting and water generously in the first years. Apply a special conifer fertiliser every year in April and weed the soil in summer. It does not require pruning. While the tender shoots of young plants can be regularly pruned, for example to form a hedge, care must be taken never to prune into old wood present on mature plants; new shoots will not grow there.
