Description

Thuja occidentalis 'Krasnal' is probably the smallest variety of Canadian arborvitae currently available. It is a true miniature conifer that forms a well-rounded ball of vibrant green, decorative even in winter. It can be planted in full sun in a rockery, in a border among shorter plants, or in a large pot on the terrace. It is not difficult to grow in well-drained, moderately moist soil with a sunny exposure.

The 'Krasnal' Canadian arborvitae was discovered in Poland by Bronisław Jan Szmit, in the form of a witches' broom that spontaneously developed on a 'Smaragd' arborvitae. The species, Thuja occidentalis, also known as Eastern arborvitae or Northern white cedar, is sometimes referred to as Canadian cedar or arborvitae. It is an evergreen conifer of the cypress family native to northeastern North America. It is a very hardy species, well adapted to temperate climates and poor, wet, or occasionally dry soils. Its nearly rot-resistant, lightweight, fragrant, and easily flammable wood lends itself to many uses. It has given rise to over 300 cultivars, including 'Krasnal', that have been selected for their ornamental qualities.

Thuja occidentalis 'Krasnal' is characterised by its very small size, its well-rounded habit and its vibrant green foliage. Its growth is very slow, so it will reach 40 cm in all directions at the age of 15-20 years. This conifer bears foliage which is aromatic when crushed, consisting of flattened twigs covered with scale-like leaves 3 to 5 mm long. Overlapping each other, the leaves give the twigs a flat appearance. The foliage persists in winter without changing colour.

The 'Krasnal' Eastern arborvitae is suitable for all gardens, even the smallest ones. Plant it among the stones in a rockery, in a Japanese garden, or in a small scene with a contemporary inspiration. It can also be placed in an elegant pottery on the terrace or balcony. It pairs well with stones, the geometric lines of pools or buildings. It can be combined with low grasses, which complement it well, with heathers, or with prostrate dwarf conifers (Juniperus horizontalis 'Blue Chip') or globose ones (Picea abies 'Little Gem').

Planting and care

Thuja occidentalis 'Krasnal' should be planted from September to November and from February to May in ordinary soil, but not too heavy, acidic, neutral or even slightly alkaline, while retaining moisture in the summer. This variety only dislikes extremely hot temperatures and prolonged drought. Choose a sunny or semi-shaded exposure. Soak the root balls well before planting. Optionally, add organic fertiliser during planting and water generously in the first years, and in case of prolonged drought. In very poor soil, you can apply a special conifer fertiliser every year in April and cultivate the soil in the summer. This hardy conifer (to -25°C at least) does not require pruning.
