Description

This Collection of Pyracanthas for a Defensive Hedge brings together three different varieties from the Saphyr series, a line of fire-resistant bushes developed by INRA, resistant to diseases such as fire blight and scab that affect older varieties. Decorative all year round, armed with thorns and incredibly robust, they are perfect for creating an impenetrable defensive hedge. These evergreen shrubs, fast-growing, quickly reach 2 to 3m in height and 1.5 to 2m in width. In spring, their white flowering attracts many pollinating insects, while their berries feed birds during the colder seasons. Highly resistant to cold and drought, they adapt to a wide range of soils and tolerate both full sun and partial shade.

The collection consists of:

1 Pyracantha SAPHYR Orange: berries of a bright orange in autumn

1 Pyracantha SAPHYR Red: variety with red berries

1 Pyracantha SAPHYR Yellow: identical, with yellow berries.

This 'Pyracanthas Saphyr' Collection allows you to create a hedge that is both impenetrable, protective, indestructible, beautiful all year round, and welcoming to the small wildlife of the garden! Plant these shrubs preferably in autumn or early spring, in full sun or partial shade, spacing them 80cm to 1 metre apart. They thrive in any well-prepared garden soil enriched with leaf compost. A boundary hedge, planted 2 meters from the property line, should not exceed 2 meters in height.

Mix these pyracanthas with shrubs such as Mahonia 'Charity', Berberis julianae, and Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa). The Mahonia, with its yellow flowers in winter, will provide an interesting contrast to the colourful berries of the pyracanthas. The Barberry, with its blue-black berries and winter foliage tinged with red, will perfectly complement the colour palette. The Blackthorn, a deciduous thorny shrub that is very easy to grow, will add another defensive and decorative dimension to the hedge. To create a 10-metre hedge, you will plant the 3 'Saphyr' pyracanthas, 2 Mahonia plants, 2 Berberis plants, and two Blackthorns, alternating and spacing them 1m to 1.50m apart.

Tip: Do not prune early in the season to fully enjoy the blooms! If possible, avoid pruning in late summer as well, to enjoy the fruits and feed the garden birds in winter.

Planting and care

Plant these 'Saphyr' pyracanthas in autumn or early spring, in full sun or partial shade, in any well-prepared garden soil. Dig planting holes that are 30-40 cm in all directions, loosening the bottom and sides with a fork or pickaxe. Maintain a planting distance of 1 m between each bush. Easy to grow and not very demanding in terms of soil, these bushes only require regular watering to promote establishment, and possibly during the first two summers after planting. Water them generously (15-20 l of water each time) but infrequently during the first few years in case of prolonged drought. If necessary, prune them lightly after flowering.
