Description

This is a collection of 10 varieties of flowering bushes that are very easy to grow and maintain, selected for their beautifully scented flowers that bloom throughout the seasons. With evergreen or deciduous foliage in winter, they allow you to create a flowering and fragrant hedge that will bring life to your garden all year round while also providing privacy. This shrub kit allows you to create approximately 10 metres (33 feet) of flowering and fragrant hedge at a lower cost.

The collection includes:

- 1 Buddleia davidii Pink Delight - Butterfly Bush: approximately 3 metres (10 feet) tall and 4 metres (13 feet) wide, fast-growing. Flowering from August to October at the end of gracefully arched stems, with dense and upright clusters of 25cm (10in) long, beautifully scented bright pink flowers. Its long deciduous leaves fall in autumn.

- 1 Ceanothus thyrsiflorus repens - California Lilac: slow-growing, with a rather prostrate habit, approximately 1 metre (3 feet) tall and 1.20 metres (4 feet) wide. Abundant spring flowering with sky blue flowers on small shiny dark green leaves. Place it slightly in front of the other shrubs in the kit, in a staggered formation. Hardiness: down to -12°C (10.4°F) in well-drained soil.

- 1 Winter Honeysuckle, Lonicera fragrantissima: approximately 2.50 metres (8 feet) tall and 2.75 metres (9 feet) wide. Dense foliage, more or less evergreen depending on the climate, often falls in January-February. Winter flowering from December to March depending on the region. The very nectar-rich small white flowers are scented and give way to small red berries that ripen in late spring to early summer.

- 1 Choisya ternata - Mexican Orange Blossom: approximately 2 metres (7 feet) in all directions, fairly fast-growing with a nicely rounded habit. Its glossy, vibrant green foliage is aromatic when crushed. It first blooms in April-May and again in late summer. Its clusters of small white flowers are very pleasantly scented, reminiscent of orange blossoms. Hardy down to approximately -12/-14°C (10.4/6.8°F), in well-drained soil.

- 1 Elaeagnus ebbingei - Oleaster: evergreen, averaging 3 metres (10 feet) tall and 1.50 metres (5 feet) wide. It is appreciated for the beauty of its silver leaves, as well as its autumn flowering with cream-white bell-shaped flowers that have a sweet fragrance. Its edible and decorative fruits resemble small coppery and silvery olives.

- 1 Syringa vulgaris Katherine Havemeyer - Lilac : approximately 4 metres (13 feet) tall and 3 metres (10 feet) wide if not pruned. This variety bears numerous clusters of double mauve flowers that are highly fragrant in May-June. Its flowers are ideal for making bouquets. Its medium green foliage is deciduous and falls in autumn.

- 1 Mahonia aquifolium - Oregon Grape: approximately 1 metre (3 feet) in all directions. Its evergreen leaves are compound, spiny, and shiny green, turning purple in winter. It blooms from February with clusters of small yellow and scented flowers, which give way to blackish berries.

- 1 Philadelphus coronarius - Mock Orange: between 2 and 3 metres (7 and 10 feet) tall, almost as wide. Deciduous foliage that turns yellow in autumn before falling. Flowering in May-June depending on the climate, with numerous cup-shaped white flowers. Its fragrance is very pronounced, emitting delightful scents of orange blossom that attract pollinating insects.

- 1 Ligustrum ovalifolium Aureum - Golden Privet: approximately 2 metres (7 feet) tall and 1.50 metres (5 feet) wide. Vigorous and upright, it has more or less evergreen foliage with golden yellow variegation. Its creamy-white and scented flowering occurs in June-July and is followed by the formation of black berries in autumn.

- 1 Ligustrum vulgare Atrovirens - Common Privet: approximately 2.50 metres (8 feet) in all directions. Evergreen foliage that is dark green. The young leaves. Flowering in July, with panicles of white and scented flowers followed by black berries, provided it is not pruned.

This mixed hedge allows you to have flowers in your garden almost all year round, with the Mahonia and honeysuckle starting the season in January, while the Elaeagnus finishes the year beautifully with its scented bell-shaped flowers. In addition to the appeal of the flowers, it also offers attractive berries that birds will enjoy during the winter. Plant these shrubs preferably in autumn or early spring, in full sun or partial shade, mixing them and spacing them 80cm (32in) to 1 metre (3 feet) apart, 1.20 metres (4 feet) for the wider ones. They will thrive in any well-prepared garden soil enriched with leaf compost. Once established, they require no watering in summer. This selection is suitable for a garden located in a region where winters are not excessively harsh.

Tip: Do not prune at the beginning of the season to fully enjoy the flowering! If possible, avoid excessive pruning in late summer to enjoy the fruits and feed the birds in the garden during winter.

Planting and care

Plant this collection in the sun or partial shade, in ordinary but well-prepared soil, enriched with leaf compost, that is rather moist but well-drained. Dig planting holes of 30-40 cm (12-16in) in all directions, thoroughly loosening the bottom and walls with a fork or pickaxe. Maintain a planting distance of 80 cm (32in) to 1 m (3ft) between each bush. Easy to grow and not very demanding, these shrubs only require mulching in summer in dry climates to maintain some moisture, at least during the first summers after planting. Water them abundantly in the first few years in the case of pronounced drought (15-20 litres of water each time), but keep waterings spaced out. You can prune the longest branches to help your shrubs branch out.
