Description

Ulex europaeus, commonly known as Gorse or Furze, is a bushy shrub with ash-green leaves and spines. It produces numerous flowers from February to June, which are pleasantly scented with almonds or coconuts depending on its exposure. It bears dark purple-brown fruits.

Native to Europe up to Germany, Ulex europaeus is a bushy shrub that grows 1 to 2m (3 to 7ft) in height and 1.5 to 2m (5 to 7ft) in width.

From February to June, it produces an abundance of large flowers measuring from 14 to 18mm (1in) in length. Its solitary flowers are golden yellow in colour. Its vegetation is highly fragrant, with a base scent of almond or coconut if exposed to full sun. Its small, sparse leaves are ash-green in colour and alternate in scale-like shape. Its foliage is adorned with long spines that are formidable. Its fruits are pod-shaped and measure 2cm (1in) in diameter, with a dark brown-purple colour.

It is used in rock gardens, slopes, or as a defensive hedge that quickly becomes impenetrable thanks to its formidable spines. For this use, allow 1m (3ft) between each plant. It is an excellent companion and tolerates all other plants.

Hardy up to -15°C (5°F), Ulex europaeus thrives in sunny and warm conditions. From March to June and from September to November, plant it in moderately moist, sandy, or even arid soil. It also tolerates very poor soils. It is highly resistant to various diseases.

Ulex europaeus does not tolerate transplantation very well, so care must be taken not to break the root ball and risk damaging the roots. At planting, watering should be abundant for good establishment, but afterwards, water requirements are minimal. This shrub does not require any particular pruning or maintenance.

Propagation: Sow the seeds under shelter after soaking them in water for 48 hours. Stem cuttings should be taken in summer, around August.
