My abelia is more of a bright pink than a pale pink. I'm disappointed because I'm creating a white flowerbed and in all your pictures they are mostly white!

Description

Abelia grandiflora Francis Mason is a hybrid bush resulting from the cross-breeding between Abelia chinensis and Abelia uniflora. This less vigorous bush than the species, hardy to -10°C has a rounded or spreading habit. With a rather slow growth, the Abelia has a long scented flowering that lasts all summer, when few shrubs are in bloom. From July to September, a profusion of pinkish-white flowers appear, gathered in terminal panicles. These flowers are 2 cm (0.8 in) long, composed of 2 to 5 sepals and have a funnel shape.

The flowers produce fruits called achenes that have a single seed. The branches of the Abelia bush have semi-evergreen glossy foliage, dark green variegated with yellow. The 5 cm (2 in) long leaves, are ovate and wavy. Originating from western China, it reaches a height of 1.50 m (4 in 11 ft) and a spread of 2 m (6 in 7 ft) when fully mature. Its height makes it ideal for small city gardens.

The Abelia grandiflora can be planted either in groups with other bushes or as a standalone plant. You can plant it in flower beds as well as in informal or trimmed hedges. It is also suitable for container gardening.

Planting and care

Abelia x grandiflora Francis Mason thrives in sunny or partially shaded locations. Plant it in light, rich, and well-drained soil. Ideally, it should be planted in a balanced mixture of compost and garden soil. It is easy to grow and requires little maintenance. This plant is resistant to cold, sea spray, and winds, but protect it from heavy frosts and cold, dry winds in winter. Between February and April, before growth resumes, prune out diseased or dead wood and keep only the vigorous branches to maintain the compact habit of the bush. It is not attacked by parasites or predators.
