Description

The Abelia grandiflora Pisto is a lovely new addition to the range of bushes suitable for small spaces and terrace decoration. Its habit is naturally compact and spreading, and its summer flowering is barely pinkish white, long and abundant. In autumn, its evergreen foliage is painted with bronze shades and adorned with beautiful reddish bracts that persist for a long time. Easy to grow, hardy, attractive all year round, this bush is perfect in a container, as a ground cover, on a slope, in a border, or in a rock garden.

Abelia x grandiflora Pisto is a bush from the Caprifoliaceae family. It comes from the Abelia x grandiflora, a vigorous, undemanding, and hardy hybrid. With a rather slow growth, this Abelia Pisto will reach about 1m (3 in 4 ft) in all directions. Its habit is compact, spreading, and bushy. It offers a long, slightly fragrant flowering that lasts throughout the summer, from July to September-October, bringing life to the garden at a time when few bushes are in bloom. Its numerous small funnel-shaped corollas, 2.5cm (1in) wide are white with a powdery pink reverse and gathered in small dense terminal panicles. As the flowers fade, they give way to beautiful compound calyxes made of decorative rust-coloured bracts on the autumn foliage. The slender and arching branches of Abelia Pisto bear glossy dark green foliage until summer. With the first cool nights, the foliage takes on a bronzed hue. It persists on the branches during normal winters.

This modest-sized Abelia Pisto can be placed either in groups with other small bushes or as a centrepiece in a flower bed, or in a large pot. You can also use it to cover the ground in front of a bed of larger bushes, on a slope, at the corner of a porch, above a low wall... You can choose landscape roses or ground cover roses as companions, cotton lavenders, or choose from the wide range of low-maintenance ground cover bushes.

Planting and care

Abelia Pisto thrives in sunny or partially shaded positions, in a mild climate, as its hardiness can be compromised below -12°C (10.4°F). Plant it in spring or early autumn in light, fertile and well-drained soil. Ideally, it should be planted in a balanced mixture of compost and garden soil. Easy to grow, it requires little maintenance. This plant is resistant to salt spray, winds and summer drought once well-rooted but protect it from heavy frosts and cold, dry winds in winter while young. Between February and April prune out diseased or dead wood and keep only vigorous branches to maintain the bush's compact habit. It is not attacked by parasites or predators.
