Beautiful subject in very good apparent health, it's a shame that the head was broken during transportation, with the packaging appearing faulty on one side.

Description

Acer negundo, also known as box elder maple, is a tree with tender green compound foliage, producing thick clusters of yellow-green or red flowers.

Originally from the United States, this 15m (49ft) tall tree is perfectly hardy. It has a spreading habit, with thin and fragile branches. The compound deciduous leaves, with 3 or 9 ovate leaflets, are light green. In June, thick and pendulous clusters of green-yellow female flowers and red male flowers bloom, before giving way to winged fruits 3 to 5cm (1 to 2in) long.

Easy to grow, the box elder maple thrives in any moist, fertile, well-worked and well-drained soil, in a sunny or partly shaded location. Find a spot sheltered from strong winds.

Acer negundo has rapid growth. It is ideal at the base of large trees to create an intermediate vegetal screen.

Tips: Prune every 3 to 5 years to balance the branches and maintain a harmonious habit.

Planting and care

Plant in spring or autumn in any fertile, deep, and moist soil in a sunny position, but not in direct sunlight or partial shade. Be cautious of strong winds. Keep the soil moist during the first two summers after planting. Mulching can be beneficial to maintain soil moisture. Pruning is necessary for young plants, and then every 3 years to balance the branches and maintain a harmonious habit. Do not prune after December as the sap rises very early.
