Description

The Berberis thunbergii 'Orange Rocket' is a thorny, compact bush with an upright habit, flamboyant with its small bright orange leaves, tender green at maturity and bright red in autumn.

Originally from Japan, the Orange Rocket Barberry forms a compact, upright bush that reaches a height of 1.5m, deciduous and thorny, with red branches. It is characterized by its 3cm (1.2in) long, rounded leaves which are bright orange, tender green at maturity and bright red in autumn. Its discreet yellow flowering is followed by the production of small bright red berries.

Berberis thunbergii 'Orange Rocket', hardy down to -15°C (5°F), grows in any moist, well-drained soil, even limestone, poor or rocky, in a sunny location. Reserve partial shade for sunnier regions. It requires little maintenance, just make sure to keep the soil moist in summer. Prune hedges in spring and September.

The Berberis thunbergii 'Orange Rocket' is often used as a low hedge. Combine it with species with silver or golden foliage to create a beautiful colour scheme. It will make a beautiful composition with pieris and herbaceous peonies.

Planting and care

Berberis thunbergii 'Orange Rocket' is hardy down to -15°C (5 °F) and should be planted in spring or autumn, in any moist, well-drained soil, even limestone, poor or stony in a sunny position, reserve partial shade for sunnier regions. Water generously and frequently during the first summers. No need to feed. It requires minimal maintenance, just make sure to keep the soil moist, especially in summer. When planting Berberis in a hedge, trim in spring and September. In informal hedges, prune the branches after flowering to give the bush a rounded, balanced shape. Be careful not to touch the branches with bare hands as they have thorns that are difficult to remove once they penetrate the skin. It can be attacked by aphids, sawflies, powdery mildew, and rust. Treat at the first signs of symptoms.
