Description

The Genista lydia is a compact shrub with spectacular flowering. In May, the arched branches of these dense vegetation cushions are covered with a profusion of tiny flowers in a bright yellow, which are very decorative and sunny.

Most genista species are native to the Mediterranean and Middle East and thrive in mild to hot climates. This particular species, Syrian genista or Lydia genista, is no exception. It does not tolerate harsh winters. However, it is not afraid of drought and is not demanding regarding exposure and soil type. With a maximum height of 70 cm (27.6 in), this compact shrub is perfect for filling rocky slopes, walls, or borders. It can also be used in containers to add flowers to the outside of your house.

Combine its yellow flowering with other varieties of genista or shrubs that bloom simultaneously, such as ceanothus. You can also use it to extend the flowering period of your flower beds; forsythia blooms earlier, while buddleias bloom later... One thing is for sure: wherever your Genista lydia is in your garden, it will provide a lovely source of brightness.

Planting and care

When planting your Gensita lydia, handling it with care is essential since it's a delicate bush when young. You can grow it anywhere except in areas with dense shade. Be sure to add extra drainage to compacted or clay soils. During planting, water the bush abundantly to remove any air pockets, and only water occasionally during the first year if it's an especially dry season.
