Description

Buddleia davidii 'Adonis Blue' is a butterfly bush with intense midnight blue flowers, thanks to the density of its inflorescence. This very vigorous bush has arching branches that give it a slightly drooping habit. It grows rapidly and blooms from July to September, producing an abundance of large paniculate flowers measuring 20 to 30 cm (7.9 to 11.8 in) in length. Its flowers are melliferous (meaning they contain substances collected by pollinating insects or some birds that will be transformed into honey) and attract butterflies and ladybugs.

The foliage of the butterfly bush is deciduous. It consists of long silver-green leaves with a grey down on the underside. This colour provides a beautiful contrast with other plants in the garden. The leaves, measuring 15 to 25 cm (5.9 to 9.8 in) in length, are pointed and lanceolate. Native to China and Japan, this blue Buddleia is very hardy. It can reach a height of up to 4 m (13.1 ft). It is a plant that is resistant to pollution.

Whether planted individually or in groups, the Buddleia davidii 'Adonis Blue' will bring intensity to your garden. You can place it in borders, especially among other shrubs, or in a free hedge. You can also pair it with other buddleias for a contrasting effect or with ceanothus for a range of blue shades.

Planting and care

Buddleia 'Adonis Blue' enjoys sunny locations. Plant it in a light, fertile, cool but above all well-drained soil. Buddleia does not enjoy hot weather, but there is no need to overwater as it will bounce back when temperatures fall. This plant has no significant enemies. However, be cautious of caterpillars, weevils, bugs, and red spider mites that can invade it.

Care

Pruning instructions The bush only requires a single pruning after flowering. However, every 2 to 3 years, it is good to cut back the branches to maintain a compact habit and prevent the bush from becoming "open". In late winter, around March-April, remove half or even two-thirds of the branches and cut off all dead wood. Buddleias flower on the current year's wood, so you won't risk removing future flowers.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
