Description

Buddleia davidii 'Summer Beauty' is a bush that blooms from summer to autumn on new shoots. Its stems are arched, giving it a slightly trailing habit. This fast-growing bush has a spreading vegetation that lasts from July to October. The cylindrical flowers measure about 1cm (0.4in) and are clustered in 30 to 50cm (11.8 to 19.7in) clusters. They turn a carmine colour and are attractive for their sweet scent.

Nicknamed the summer lilac, Buddleia has lanceolate and denticulate leaves that are 10 to 30cm (3.9 to 11.8in) long. These deciduous leaves are greyish-green in spring and turn silver-green. Native to southwest China and Tibet, it is a vigorous bush that is resistant to pollution.

Loved by butterflies for its charming scent, Buddleia 'Summer Beauty' is also called the Butterfly Bush. When fully grown, it can reach a height of 3 to 5m (9ft 10in to 16ft 5in) with a spread of 4m (13ft 1in). These are beautiful cut flowers. It is often found in hedges, flower beds, associated with other bushes, or as a standalone plant. It is also a plant that is suitable for pot cultivation. You can plant Buddleia with other fast-growing plants to create an instant garden. Its name "Buddleia" comes from the name of Reverend Adam Buddle, an English botanist who discovered the plant in China in 1869.

Care

Pruning instructions The bush only requires a single pruning after flowering. However, every 2 to 3 years, it is good to cut back the branches to maintain a compact habit and prevent the bush from "opening up". In late winter, around March or April, remove half or even two-thirds of the branches and cut off all the dead wood. Buddleias flower on the current year's growth, so you won't risk removing future flowers.
