The young plant suffered from abundant rainfall and lack of sunlight after planting. This year, it has recovered well, bloomed, doubled in size and spread.

Description

Buddleja x davidii Rêve de Papillon 'Pink' ('Minpap'), or Buddleia davidii Butterfly Dream® 'Pink', is a recent cultivar obtained by Minier nurseries. This wonderful bush stands out for its enormous pink-violet inflorescences, which exhale a delicious fragrance highly appreciated by butterflies. This generous flowering enlivens the whole summer, displaying a superb compact, rounded and upright habit and beautiful dark green foliage with light green-grey felt underneath. It is easy to grow in ordinary, even mediocre and occasionally dry, soil. Perfect in a shrub border or a flowering hedge!

Buddleja x davidii Rêve de Papillon 'Pink' ('Minpap') is a deciduous to semi-evergreen bush belonging to the Scrophulariaceae family. This superb cultivar, obtained in 2003 by Minier Nurseries, comes from David's Buddleia, also called Father David's Buddleia or Changing Buddleia, a robust Chinese species that has become invasive.

The bush has an upright and rounded habit, well-branched, which will reach an average height and spread of 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in 10 years, depending on the growing conditions. It blooms from July to September to give an abundance of dense, paniculate flowers measuring 25 cm to 35 cm (9.8 in to 13.8 in) long. These flowers are pink-violet with an orange-red eye and release a sweet fragrance, which is highly attractive to pollinating insects. The ornamental foliage of this Butterfly Bush consists of long, dark green leaves, with a greyish fuzz on the undersides. The leaves, measuring 15 cm to 25 cm (5.9 in to 9.8 in) long, are pointed and lanceolate. This hardy bush is resistant to urban pollution and does not suffer from occasional drought in deep soil.

Whether planted individually or in groups, in a hedge, at the corner of a terrace or at the back of a perennial border, Buddleja x davidii Rêve de Papillon 'Pink' ('Minpap') will enhance the garden in a unique way. Its pink inflorescences animated by a constant flight of butterflies are a spectacle in themselves. They also highlight the blue flowers of Ceanothus 'Gloire de Versailles' for example, or the mauve and white panicles of certain summer lilacs. You can plant it in a mixed hedge, with botanical roses, serviceberries, hawthorns, ornamental apple trees or other prunus. It adapts well to coastal areas and can be grown in containers on a terrace. Its fragrant flowers are also very pretty in bouquets. You can also plant it alongside tall grasses (Miscanthus, Panicum, Deschampsia), for an elegant contrast.

Planting and care

It is easy to grow, as it is a low-maintenance plant that adapts to a wide range of soils and climates. It enjoys sunny locations, but also flowers in partial shade. Plant it in spring or early autumn, in ordinary soil, even limestone and poor, but well-worked and well-drained. Once well established, the plant will tolerate periods of moderate drought, especially if planted in deep soil. It has no significant enemies. However, beware of caterpillars, weevils, bugs, and red spider mites that can invade it. Vigorous pruning after flowering and/or in early spring keeps the habit well-branched and compact, and encourages the bush to produce numerous flowers.

Care

Pruning instructions The bush only requires a single pruning after flowering, or in spring. However, every 2 to 3 years, cut back the branches to maintain a compact habit and thus prevent the bush from "opening up". In late winter, around March or April, remove half or even two-thirds of the branches and cut off all dead wood. Buddleias flower on the current year's wood, so you won't risk removing the upcoming flowers.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
