This bush seems dead after 2 years of planting. Does the foliage take time to appear as is the case for the Calycanthus Venus?

Description

Clethra barbinervis is a deciduous bush, remarkable for its trailing white flowers and its leaves with prominent veins covered in a white down.

Clethra barbinervis blooms in myriad small clusters of white bell-shaped flowers. This melliferous flowering can be admired during the summer period, from July to August. In autumn, its foliage changes colour and takes on warm shades of yellow and red. Then winter arrives, which highlights its remaining fruits forming droplets of dew or frost, dark brown, and its polished bark, a greyish brown that exfoliates. In the garden, this densely growing bush does not exceed 3 m in height and spread.

This bush will thrive in a sheltered location, protected from cool winds, in a slightly acidic and rich, well-drained soil. Semi-shade exposure is recommended.

This Japanese-inspired bush is ideal as a backdrop for landscape decoration, or as a decorative hedge. It will bring a fragrant and dramatic touch to your garden, and you can plant it with Photinias, Forsythias, Pieris, etc.

Planting and care

The Clethra barbinervis plants grow in rich, well-drained and slightly acidic soil in full sun or partial shade, and protected from drafts. They prefer well-drained soil that stays moist in summer and do not tolerate limestone well. It is recommended to prune the young plant in order to maintain a dense habit and prune it by removing dead branches. Do not add fertiliser.
