Description

Cuphea miniata 'Mix' is an annual plant that forms an undershrub, with generous and long flowering, from June until the frosts. It produces graceful tubular, star-shaped flowers in a mix of pink, red, and purple shades, around a violet heart. Little known and rare in cultivation, this plant native to Mexico can be sown under cover or directly in place and is easily grown. Its somewhat spreading habit gives a rustic look to borders and beds.

Cuphea miniata belongs to the Lythraceae family. This annual herbaceous plant is native to Mexico. It forms an undershrub that reaches an average height of 40 to 60 cm. Its branched stems bear opposite, narrow, pointed, lance-shaped or ovate leaves that can measure up to 8 cm long. The solitary tubular flowers open into 5 well-separated petals. The flowers give way to the formation of fruits that are capsules containing several seeds. The flowering period extends from mid-summer to mid-autumn.

Cuphea miniata 'Mix' prefers rich, well-drained soils in a sheltered location, in non-scorching sun or partial shade. It can be grown in a pot in a bright spot. Its rapid growth allows it to form an attractive and generous plant in one season. Its flowers in a mix of rich colours, and its bushy habit, pair well with other annuals or biennials or perennials like wallflowers, geraniums, and fuchsias in partial shade. The key is to provide it with warmth, non-scorching sun, and not too drying soil.

Attention, seeds reserved for experienced gardeners used to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust, barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow your Cuphea miniata Mix from early February to April in good soil covering the seeds with a very thin layer of compost or vermiculite, as light is necessary for germination. Germination takes 8 to 10 days at 18-20°C. Light promotes germination, warmth is essential. It may be useful to enclose the sowing in a polythene bag.

When they are sufficiently developed to be handled, transplant the seedlings into 7.5 cm pots and grow them in a cooler environment, repotting if necessary. For outdoor planting, gradually acclimatise the young plants to outdoor conditions and transplant them at the end of spring, after the frosts. Space them 25 cm apart. Choose well-drained soil in a sheltered location, in full sun or partial shade, but sheltered from scorching sunlight.

Cuphea miniata can be sown directly outdoors in May.
