Daphne mezereum var. rubra

The Daphne mezereum rubra is a lovely upright bush, little known, with a purple-pink winter flowering that is very fragrant and even heady. Perfect for rockeries.

This small bush has an open habit, with upright, thick and very flexible branches that can reach a height of 1.20m (3 ft 11 in). Very floriferous from February to April, it is adorned with delicate tubular flower heads, formed of purple-pink flowers measuring 2cm (0.8 in), grouped in 3 or 4, very fragrant on bare stems. Then come the matte green leaves with a slightly bluish underside, lanceolate, with a fine, fluffy lamina, grouped in tufts at the top of the branches and then spreading along the length of the year's stems. The red, poisonous fruits develop on the leafless branches of the previous year.

The Daphne mezereum var. rubra appreciates a light, fresh, rich, slightly limestone and well-drained soil, in partial shade or full shade. It is a slow-growing but very hardy species native to Japan.

The Daphne mezereum rubra is perfect for an ericaceous bed or as a standalone plant, even in a container on a terrace. But to fully enjoy its fragrance, it is wise to place it near the house or a pathway.

This species doesn't like growing in pots, where it has difficulty putting down roots: get it into position quickly, then don't move it again!

Note: Daphnes are sometimes temperamental plants, and their cultivation can be difficult if the conditions are not suitable. They are best reserved for experienced gardeners.
