Planted about a month ago, it doesn't seem to be in great shape. I believe we need to wait for it to recover and adapt to the soil.. at this point, only one branch remains. Progress to be monitored.

Description

Deutzia x hybrida 'Mont Rose' is a deciduous flowering bush, with lovely pale-pink flowers in June-July. It has rapid growth and a vigorous bushy habit. It will be an ideal companion for flowering hedges.

The 'Mont Rose' Deutzia is a remarkable bush with a slightly slender rounded habit and graceful branches laden with cascading clusters of flowers. With rapid growth, it reaches a height of 3 m (9.9 ft) and a width of 2 m (6.6 ft) at maturity.

Its deciduous lance-shaped leaves have serrated edges and measure 6 cm to 10 cm (2.4 in to 3.9 in) in length. They are intensely green on the upper side and light green underneath throughout the season. 'Mont Rose' provides a spectacle of generous clusters of flowers during June and July. The pink buds unfurl to reveal 5 star-shaped petals that lighten to become white, offering romantic white-pink shades. The abundance of yellow stamens makes the corolla's heart sparkle. The flowering branches hold up well in a vase, making unique bouquets when combined with roses and wildflowers.

Deutzia belong to the Hydrangeaceae family (formerly Saxifragaceae), just like hydrangeas, and are recognisable by their upright stems with thick pith, their opposite leaves with stiff hairs, and their corymbs or panicles of flowers. 'Mont Rose' forms a vigorous bush with slender drooping branches adorned with lanceolate leaves carried by a short petiole and with visible veins. It has rapid growth. Its tiny star-shaped flowers with 5 petals are grouped in dense panicles along the branches and attract pollinating insects.

This bush prefers rich, deep, and moist soils, and tolerates slightly chalky soils. It will thrive in full sun or partial shade. It is recommended to prune the Deutzia after flowering to maintain its rounded habit. The buds form on the previous year's wood, so pruning in winter is not advisable.

A bit out of fashion, survivors of old gardens, deutzias, like lilacs and old roses, are among those almost indestructible bushes that require little effort but provide a lot of satisfaction to the gardener.

The 'Mont Rose' cultivar is said to be a hybrid between Deutzia longifolia and D. discolor or D. purparescens. It has proven itself since it arrived on the market in 1925. It has received the award for Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society, guaranteeing both its ornamental qualities and its robustness.

Planting and care

Plant it in a sunny or partially shaded spot between November and April. Water it regularly only during the first few summers.

It reaches its adult size in 5 to 7 years. It is a disease-resistant bush.

Replace one-third of the stems that are over 3 years old by cutting them at the stump using a pruning saw or a strong secateurs. This task can be done in winter.
