This Deutzia is a compact and bushy dome with a somewhat spreading appearance. It looks spectacular in late spring when it is covered in a thousand white and blush pink campanulate flowers. Its small size, resistance to diseases and pests, and ease of cultivation even in poor and dry soil, make it an essential addition to any garden. It can be used as ground cover on a sunny slope, as a border or planted in a container on the terrace.

Description

The Deutzia rosea Campanulata, due to its modest growth, its pretty bushy dome shape and its long white flowering in late spring and early summer, is a perfect bush for small spaces and terrace decoration. Its arching branches bear white bell-shaped flowers, surrounded by a discreet purple calyx, produced in such dense and numerous panicles that they almost make its dark green foliage disappear for more than a month.

The hybrid Deutzia ‘Campanulata' belongs to the saxifragaceae family. It is a horticultural selection with white flowers of the Deutzia (x) rosea. The latter is the result of cross-breeding between Deutzia gracilis and D. purpurascens. 'Campanulata' is a small bush forming a dome that will not exceed 1.10 m (3 ft 7 in) in width. Its growth is rather fast. The abundant flowering takes place from June to July, almost making the foliage disappear. Its campanulate flowers with 5 petals, 2 cm (0.8 in) wide, are grouped in panicles along the branches. They are pure white when they bloom, but the exterior slightly tints pink at maturity. Each one is surrounded at the base by a purple calyx. They attract pollinating insects and stand out nicely against its long ovate leaves, strongly veined, 7 cm (2.8 in) long, with a matte dark green colour. The Deutzia flourishes in a limestone soil rich in humus and moisture. Prune after flowering.

Deutzias are shrubs that have survived the test of time and are still popular today. They are almost indestructible and require minimal care but provide a lot of satisfaction to gardeners. The 'rosea Campanulata' deutzia stands out in the garden, even after other spring shrubs have faded. It can be planted en masse along a border or pathway, on a sunny slope, alone or mixed with other ground cover shrubs such as The Fairy or Swany roses, dwarf abelias, caryopteris or shrubby potentillas. Its limited growth makes it suitable for small gardens, terraces, and balconies, where it can be planted in a large pot to add charm and beauty.

Planting and care

The Deutzia rosea Campanulata requires little maintenance. It can thrive in ordinary, well-drained soil, even limestone-rich and occasionally dry. However, it will be more floriferous in humus-rich and well-drained soil and when planted in a sunny position. It is sensitive to compacted soils and saturated conditions in winter. Its hardiness is excellent (-20°C (-4 °F)).
