Very good. Planted 3 years ago with good growth; very beautiful flowers this year! I keep an eye on the leaves which sometimes develop "pustules" and remove them immediately. It looks very beautiful.

Description

Crataegus laevigata 'Paul's Scarlet' is a beautiful ornamental hawthorn forming a bush with rounded clusters of numerous dark pink double flowers followed by red fruits. It is sought after for creating countryside hedges.

Originating from the Northern Hemisphere, this hawthorn is very hardy and can reach a height of 5 m to 6 m (16.4  ft  to 19.7 ft) with a globose and well-branched habit. Also known as "Flowering thorn", it is ideal for creating countryside hedges and defensive hedges (along with pyracantha or cotoneaster) thanks to its thorny branches. Its deciduous leaves, measuring 1 cm to 5 cm (0.4 in to 2 in) in length, are alternate, lobed, oval-shaped, and have a shiny green colour that turns red in autumn. In early May, fragrant dark pink double flowers, approximately 2 cm (0.8 in) in diameter, grow in tight clusters. In September, the bright red globose fruits appear, measuring 2cm (0.8 in) in diameter. The fruit is not edible.

Easy to cultivate, Crataegus laevigata 'Paul's Scarlet' adapts well to any well-drained soil, even chalky soil, in a sunny or partially shaded location. Not demanding, it only requires balanced pruning in February. Its virtues are recognised as a heart regulator, antispasmodic, and diuretic when used in infusion with dried flowers.

Planting and care

Plant in autumn in any well-drained soil, even limestone, in a sunny or semi-shaded position. Not demanding, it will be satisfied with a balanced pruning in February. To shape a hawthorn into a tree, reduce the bush to a single stem after planting. Then cut off all the suckers at their point of origin.
