Description

Hydrangea 'Bloombuster' is a variety of hybrid hydrangea that stands out for its perpetual flowering, large pink flowers, and compact habit. This bush is capable of blooming twice per season, after each deadheading. This is a sought-after quality when space is limited, whether in the garden or on a terrace. This easy-to-maintain variety tolerates extremely low temperatures, and its delicately scented flowering attracts pollinators.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bloombuster' is one of the many hybrids obtained by cross-breeding hardy species belonging to the hydrangea family, originating from China and Japan. This cultivar has been selected for its abundant flowering and ease of maintenance: unlike traditional hydrangeas, it can be pruned at any time without compromising next year's bloom. This cultivar forms a compact small bush that reaches a maximum height and width of 75 cm to 1 m. Its pink flowers, in the shape of a rounded plate, appear from June to September, and again in autumn if conditions are favourable. It is possible to encourage the formation of new flowers at any time: when an umbel fades, simply cut it off. This way, the plant can devote all its energy to producing new flowers. The dark green, oval leaves, form a beautiful backdrop for this flowering. 'Bloombuster' has good branching, and its vegetation forms a beautiful ball of colourful flowers in season. The deciduous foliage turns yellow in autumn before falling. Hydrangeas can live for at least 50 years.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bloombuster' is the perfect variety for small spaces and large pots, especially since its cultivation is within the reach of all gardeners. In the garden, it can be placed at the front of borders or in mixed borders that it will colour throughout the summer. It pairs well with colourful-leaved Heucheras, fluffy-flowered Astilbes, luxuriant-leaved Hostas, and Japanese Anemones with their complementary autumn flowering.

Planting and care

Plant hydrangea macrophylla 'Bloombuster' in spring or early autumn, preferably in a slightly shaded location, for example against an east-facing wall or even north. Protect it from strong, drying winds. It does not require ericaceous soil but appreciates deep, moist, well-drained, fairly fertile soil, possibly enriched with a good base fertiliser before planting. If the soil is dry at the base of the wall, install the root ball at least 30-40 cm away and incorporate well-decomposed compost to better retain moisture in the soil. It is very hardy and can be planted in cold regions without worry. As for pruning, this variety has no particular requirements and it can be done in spring or autumn. Cut back a quarter or a third of the oldest stems to the base when the plant is mature, to promote the formation of new shoots every year during March and April.
