Hydrangea macrophylla Endless Summer The Original Pink
Received last year and had 3 small flowers. This spring it seems to be recovering well, there are plenty of buds on the branches and also a few emerging from the ground near the base.

Hydrangea macrophylla Endless Summer® The Original (Pink), like the other varieties of the Endless Summer® series, has particularly perpetual flowering. Its plump flower balls display a soft pink colour in neutral soil, or a pale-blue in acidic soil. It blooms for a very long period, both on one-year-old wood and on the current year's shoots. This particularly hardy bush will not suffer from early or late frosts. It will bloom from the beginning of summer until October. These qualities will undoubtedly make this variety an exceptional hydrangea.
Â
Hydrangea macrophylla, from which Endless Summer® The Original comes, belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family. It is native to China and Japan. Endless Summer® The Original is part of a series of varieties selected for their excellent ability to re-bloom throughout the season, both on one-year-old branches and on the current year's shoots. It is a very hardy shrub with a rounded bushy habit, almost as wide as it is tall, reaching 1.2m (4ft) in all directions at maturity. From June to October, its small flowers gather in dense clusters, forming large pompoms of pale pink-mauve in neutral soil, or baby blue in very acidic soil or rich in aluminium sulphate, then fade in a texture that resembles paper. They renew themselves tirelessly, until the foliage takes on its autumn colours before falling. In summer, the flowering is accompanied by dark green foliage. The leaves are opposite, reaching a minimum length of 10cm (3.9in). They are simple, ovate to elliptical, ending in a pointed tip.
Â
Endless Summer hydrangeas are sturdy and faithful plants, which live and bloom for many years in the garden. With excellent hardiness, these shrubs are well known for brightening up the north side of houses. This variety will thrive in flowerbeds as well as hedges, but it really deserves a prime location, near a terrace or close to the home. Even though these plants fear limestone, hydrangeas are not strictly ericaceous plants. Mix them with each other and with magellanica fuchsias, the curious climbing species Fuchsia hatschbachii, or annual impatiens. Alternatively, plant spring-flowering bulbs in front of their round silhouette. Enjoy their beautiful flowers for a long time, in the garden or in bouquets at home.
Â
Note: The colour of Hydrangea macrophylla flowers varies depending on the soil pH. Traditionally blue varieties turn pink in neutral or alkaline soil. To maintain a beautiful blue colour, mix ericaceous soil with your garden soil and apply aluminium sulphate (found in slate) or alum stone every spring.

Botanical data
Plant in spring or early autumn, preferably in a slightly shady position, for example against an east-facing wall or even to the north. This variety requires a few hours of sun per day to develop beautiful autumn colours. Protect it from cold and drying winds. It does not require ericaceous soil, but appreciates deep, moist but well-drained, fairly fertile soil, possibly enriched with a good base fertiliser before planting.
If planting at the base of a protective wall and the soil is dry, place the root ball at least 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in) away from it and incorporate a significant amount of well-decomposed compost to better retain moisture in the soil.Â
Very hardy, it can be planted in cold regions without fear.
As for pruning, remove faded flowers on the first bud or on the pair of buds directly below. Cut back a quarter or a third of the older stems to the base, when the plant is mature, to promote the formation of new shoots. Carry out this pruning every year during March and April.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
