More information

A hydrangea with a rounded, compact habit, distinguished by its particularly long, delicately coloured bloom: its large balls of flowers sport different shades of pale green, creamy white and pastel pink, with each flower changing colour over time. Flowering is so abundant that it almost covers the beautiful forest-green foliage that adorns the shrub. This hardy, floriferous variety has a place in every garden. It can be planted en masse or as a standalone specimen or in pots, in semi-shade, in cool, acidic, well-drained soil.

Description

The Hydrangea macrophylla 'Soft Pink Salsa' is part of a new series of hydrangeas developed in Denmark called 'Music Collection'. It is a compact plant with exceptionally long floweringoffering large flowers in magnificent tones. In the 'Soft Pink Salsa' variety, the florets tightly packed on beautiful heads display various shades of pale green, cream and pastel pink. This romantic and generous flowering repeats throughout the summer for 3 months. The bush displays a nice, dense, rounded habit that will have a striking effect in the garden or pot. The flowers are sublime in bouquets.

The Hydrangea macrophylla 'Soft Pink Salsa' is one of many hybrids obtained by cross-breeding the species H. macrophylla and H. aspera, among others. All these hardy plants belong to the Hydrangeaceae family and are native to China and Japan. This bush is barely taller than it is wide, reaching 1.50 m (4 ft 11 in) in height and approximately 1.40 m (4 ft 7 in) in widthFrom July to September, it produces many large, dense and hemispherical flower heads 17 to 20 cm (6.7 to 7.9 in) in diameter, composed of many decorative fertile flowers and very few insignificant fertile florets. This flowering, which forms on one-year-old wood, spreads over dark green deciduous leaves, which fall in autumn. The leaves are opposite; they reach a minimum of ten centimetres in length. They are single, ovate to elliptical, ending in a pointed tip, dentate. Hydrangeas can live at least 50 years.

The Hydrangea 'Soft Pink Salsa' brings a beautiful touch of romanticism and tenderness to the semi-shaded areas of the garden or terrace. The hydrangeas are well known for brightening up the north side of houses. This variety will be happy in an east-facing position, in the morning sun or north, in beds and hedges. This variety is suited to growing in the ground and large containers, which can be placed on the terrace or near the entrance of a property. Even though hydrangeas are not fond of limestone, they are not strictly ericaceous plants. Pair them with magellanica fuchsias, with lilies, or plant spring-flowering bulbs in front of their round silhouette. Enjoy their sumptuous and long-lasting flowering in the garden or the house.

Planting and care

To plant the macrophylla 'Soft Pink Salsa' hydrangea, choose a slightly shaded spot in spring or early autumn, such as against an east-facing or northern wall. Keep it away from cold winds and the sun. It prefers deep, fresh, well-drained, and relatively fertile soil, but ericaceous soil is unnecessary. You can enrich the soil with a good base fertiliser before planting. If the soil is dry at the foot of the wall, plant the root ball at least 30-40 cm (11.8-15.7 in) away from the base and add well-rotted compost to improve soil freshness. This plant is resilient and can be planted in cold areas. When pruning, remove the faded flowers on the first or second bud. To encourage the formation of young shoots, cut back a quarter or a third of the oldest stems to the base when the plant matures. Prune every year in March or April.
