Description

Hydrangea paniculata Early Sensation has one of the earliest and most original flowers available: initially white, the panicles of flowers then turn reddish-pink.

Similar to the 'Vanilla Strawberry' variety but with earlier flowering, Hydrangea paniculata 'Early Sensation' blooms from the end of June to October. It continuously adorns itself with large panicles of white flowers that turn intense pink, so that the shrub carries both young white flowers and older pink ones until mid-autumn.

The flowers attract butterflies and the panicles are carried by long, thick, and very rigid branches. Paniculate Hydrangea has dark green deciduous foliage that turns red in autumn.

A shrub with an erect and rounded habit, it reaches a height of 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in). It is a vigorous and robust species with very good hardiness. It can be placed both isolated and in masses or flower beds. It is a plant that thrives by the sea. It also grows very well in containers. Its flowers are also used for creating both fresh and dried bouquets.

Planting and care

During planting, install your Early Sensation paniculate hydrangea in deeply worked soil. A good base fertiliser (horn or dried blood) will promote the recovery of your plant and nourish it without risk of burning. Paniculate hydrangeas prefer humus-bearing soils but more easily tolerate less fertile soils and drought. If your soil is dry, mix our STOCKOSORB® water retainer with the soil when filling in the planting hole and provide a watering basin on the surface. The plant's spring vegetation appears rather late.

Water frequently during flowering, while not watering directly onto the foliage and flowers. At the end of summer, we advise you not to cut the dry umbels that will protect the terminal shoots of the branches in winter; you should cut all the dry flowers at the end of February or on the first summer days. Paniculate hydrangeas require vigorous pruning to develop large inflorescences.

Care

Pruning instructions Prune the faded inflorescences at the end of winter and, if necessary, cut back the branches to half their height in order to maintain a squat habit. As it flowers on the year's wood, this procedure will not impede flowering when carried out at the end of winter.
