First order on this website. Parcel arrived one day late, despite payment for express delivery. The two Hydrangeas ordered were not in pots, as stipulated on the website, but wrapped in kraft paper which weakened the rootballs. The Hydrangea Pastelgreen was not labelled. Will have to wait until flowering to confirm if it is indeed this variety. So, overall, delivery promise not kept, but let's hope the promise of flowers will be fulfilled. I planted them quickly and for now the plants seem to have recovered well from their journey.

More information

This hydrangea is a true novelty, due to its panicles that take the form of a ball and not a cone. Each little flower is the seat of a small colourful revolution, where white, green, pale pink and even bright pink coexist and succeed each other. A long summer flowering, with faded tones, under which hides a bush with a compact habit. It is well suited to small gardens and cultivation in large pots.

Description

Hydrangea paniculata Pastelgreen® 'Rencolor' is an innovative French creation. It is a paniculate hydrangea that stands out for its inflorescences that take the form of a ball rather than a cone. On each of them, dozens of small flowers are the seat of a colourful revolution, where white, green, pale pink and even bright pink coexist and succeed each other. This long summer flowering, crowns a bush with a compact habit, well adapted to small spaces and cultivation in large pots.

Hydrangea paniculata is a botanical species belonging to the Hydrangeaceae family, originating from China and Japan. It is particularly hardy. The variety Pastelgreen® 'Rencolor', introduced to the market in August 2016, is a particularly compact cultivar.

It will quickly reach 1 m to 1.2 m (3.3 ft to 3.9 ft) in all directions, which remains very moderate for a paniculate hydrangea. From the end of June, it blooms on the current year's wood with large rounded dense panicles. They gather a cloud of simple sterile florets, carried by long pedicels, quickly changing colour over time: they open in white, become white and green, then white, pale green, and turn into quickly fading bright pink, fading again in front of a pale green mixed with white shade. This variety has a ramified growth habit and solid branches, covered with medium green oval leaves that turn yellow in autumn before falling in winter.

Hydrangea paniculata distinguishes itself from its cousin, Hydrangea macrophylla, by its good tolerance towards the sun, sea spray, and relative drought. Planted in any good garden soil, without too much limestone, Hydrange paniculata Pastelgreen® 'Rencolor' shows fairly rapid growth. It is a very hardy variety that can be planted in isolation, in a small hedge or in a border, or in a light woodland, mixed with other hydrangeas, to play with contrasts and shapes. You can also plant it with grasses like Miscanthus, Panicum virgatum Squaw and Stipa. It can also be grown in a very large pot on a terrace. Its flowers, even when faded, are very beautiful in bouquets.

Planting and care

It is not very demanding on the nature of the soil, as long as it is not too heavy or too chalky. It requires a sunny but not scorching exposure, or partially shaded. At planting, place it in deeply worked soil. A good base fertiliser (horn or dehydrated blood) will promote the recovery of your plant and feed it without risk of burning. If your soil tends to be dry, mix our water retainer, stockosorb, with the soil when filling the planting hole and provide a watering basin on the surface.

In late summer, we advise you not to cut the dry panicles that will protect the terminal shoots of the branches in winter. Remove all the dry flowers at the end of February or at the first sign of good weather. Their spring vegetation is quite late.

These shrubby hydrangeas with elongated inflorescences are drought-resistant and easily establish themselves even in non-acidic soil. They bloom generously from June until the first frost. When planted in the sun, their inflorescences change colour in autumn.

Hydrangea paniculata should be pruned short at the end of winter to produce more large inflorescences.
