1/3 hydrangeas really superb. The other two (planted in the same conditions) a bit more scruffy, but it will come along.

Description

The Hydrangea paniculata Phantom is a delightful flowering hydrangea shrub with an upright and rounded habit. From August to October, it is covered with very large panicles that start off green and then turn white. These panicles can measure up to 40cm (15.7in) in length. The flowers of this variety are the largest and most abundant among paniculate hydrangeas.

The panicles are borne on long, thick, and very rigid branches. The deciduous foliage of the paniculate hydrangea is dark green and turns red in autumn. The growth is airy.

With rapid growth, the Hydrangea paniculata Phantom reaches a height of 2.50m (6.6ft) at maturity. It is a vigorous  species with excellent hardiness. It can be planted as a standalone specimen, or in borders and beds. It also thrives well in containers. Its flowers are also used for making fresh and dried bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant your Phantom paniculata hydrangea in deeply cultivated soil. A good base fertilizer (fish blood and bone) will promote the establishment of your plant and nourish it without risk of burning. The paniculata hydrangea prefers humus-bearing soils but tolerates less fertile soils and drought. If your soil tends to be dry, mix our water retainer, Stockosorb, with the soil when filling the planting hole and provide a watering basin on the surface. Their spring growth is quite late. Water frequently during flowering, while avoiding direct watering of the foliage and flowers. In late summer, we recommend not cutting the dry flowers, as they will protect the terminal shoots of the branches in winter. Cut off all the dry flowers at the end of February or at the first signs of good weather. Paniculata hydrangeas require vigorous pruning to develop large inflorescences.
