Description

Hydrangea serrata 'Bleuet' is a beautiful variety of Lacecap Hydrangea recently selected in Brittany by Pierre-Michel Kerneur. The plant is vigorous, with a lovely rounded habit and abundant flowering in July-August. Its inflorescences are flat corymbs, of modest size, whose colour varies depending on the soil. They will be a beautiful bright blue in acidic soil, and pink in neutral soil. It can be planted in borders or even in a large container on the terrace, in partial shade or shade.

Hydrangea serrata is a mountain plant that thrives in cool and humid climates, resistant to cold (-20°C), less sensitive to late frosts, belonging to the Hydrangeaceae family. They thrive in rainy, cool, and less sunny climates. Preferring partially or significantly shaded exposures, they tolerate morning sun if their feet stay cool. These shrubs prefer acidic to neutral soils, rather rich and humus-bearing.

'Bleuet' Hydrangea forms a rounded bush in the space of 10 years, which can reach 1.50m in height and spread 1.20m wide. Its deciduous foliage is dense and provides a beautiful backdrop for the flowering. This foliage consists of lanceolate, dark green leaves with finely toothed margins, traversed by lighter veins. These leaves tend to turn red in the sun and colour in autumn before falling. Above this vegetation, the inflorescences, small flat corymbs, succeed from July to August. Each one is composed of a few large sterile florets surrounding a core of tiny fertile florets with a frothy appearance. Their shades vary depending on the soil pH, but also, to a lesser extent, depending on the plant's exposure.

The 'Bleuet' Hydrangea easily finds a place at the foot of a north or east-facing wall. It also highlights entrances and pathways and creates pleasantly mounding small hedges with ball-type hydrangeas, such as macrophylla hydrangeas. Vary the sizes and colours of the flowers. Plant shade perennials at the base of hydrangeas, including Brunneras, Hardy Geraniums, or Tiarellas and Heucherellas that will create flowered carpets in front of their round silhouette.

Planting and care

Plant Hydrangea serrata 'Bleuet' in spring or early autumn, preferably in a slightly shaded location, for example against an east-facing wall or even north-facing. It is best to protect it from cold, drying winds.

It does not require acidic soil but appreciates deep, moist, well-drained, and fairly fertile soil, optionally enriched with a good base fertiliser before planting. If the soil is dry at the base of the wall, place the root ball at least 30-40 cm away and incorporate a generous amount of well-decomposed compost to better retain moisture in the soil. It is very hardy and can be planted in cold regions without worry.

As for pruning, remove faded flowers at the first bud or on the pair of buds directly below. Cut back a quarter to a third of the older stems at the base, when the plant is mature, to promote the formation of young shoots. Perform this pruning every year in March if your climate is cold. If you have relatively mild winters, you can do it at the end of autumn by removing the faded flowers.
