Beautiful young plant arrived with a small branch broken, but it doesn't matter compared to the main ones. I hope it will recover nicely once planted.

Description

Ilex aquifolium Argenteomarginata is a compact and pyramidal shrub also known as the variegated holly due to its shiny green leaves edged in cream white.

Unmanaged, the variegated holly can grow into a small, slender tree reaching 8m (26 ft 2 in) in height with a spread of 3m. However, its growth is rather slow and it can fit well in small gardens with annual pruning. The leaves of Ilex aquifolium Argenteomarginata are evergreen, tough, and dentate, with edges adorned with 7-9 spiny teeth measuring up to 8cm (3.1 in) long and 4cm (1.6 in) wide. Ilex aquifolium Argenteomarginata produces discreet white flowers and becomes adorned with bright red berries carried by the female plants.  These are highly decorative and appreciated by birds. The berries persist on the plant throughout winter. It is essential to have at least one male plant for pollination.

Highly hardy, the variegated holly is hardy down to -20°C and thrives in all regions.  This plant prefers acidic and light soil and heavy soils are not well tolerated. Avoid placing it in areas that are exposed to strong winds, although it tolerates sea spray and pollution well.

The variegated holly is ideal for small gardens as it responds well to pruning. It is perfect for creating defensive and decorative hedges, can be grown in containers, and can even be trained as a standard. It can also be planted as a standalone specimen in the middle of a short grass meadow to enjoy its colours.

Planting and care

Ilex aquifolium 'Argenteomarginata' is a robust and hardy young plant that does not require any particular care. However, if the soil is rather dry, water during periods of high heat or drought. Mulch the base. You can prune it as a hedging plant in March before new growth starts to appear. Prune in June and September to maintain it as a specimen plant or topiary.  Beware of attacks from holly fly, shoot miners, scale insects and sooty mold. Aphids can feast on the new shoots.
