Ilex crenata Blondie - Japanese Holly

The Ilex crenata 'Blondie', also known as Japanese holly, is a small evergreen shrub with a dense and compact habit and light yellow foliage in spring that then turns pale green.  Its small leaves resemble those of boxwood.
 

Originally from Japan, Ilex crenata 'Blondie' is a small bush that reaches a height of 60 cm. Its dense and compact habit makes it suitable for creating small or medium hedges. Its small leaves are ovate and leathery, and are a pretty light green colour. Leaves are spineless, while its young shoots are a bright light yellow. Its foliage is very decorative, with different colours depending on the season. In June, its small green flowers produce spherical berries measuring 4 to 6 mm (0.2 to 0.2 in) in diameter, ranging from mauve to black.

Resistant to temperatures as low as -15°C.  Ilex crenata 'Blondie' thrives in sunny, semi-shaded, or shaded positions. Plant it every 40 to 60 cm (15.7 to 23.6 in) depending on the desired result, in a humus-rich, light, and moist soil with a neutral pH.
