Description
The 'Golden King' Holly or Variegated Holly is a shrub with a compact and pyramidal habit, highly decorative thanks to its evergreen foliage, variegated with green and gold, and pinkish-white flowers that bloom from May to June.
Originating from a cross-breeding between two species (Ilex aquifolium and Ilex perado), the Golden King variegated holly has a pyramidal habit and reaches a height of 6m (19 ft 8 in) and a width of 2.50m when matured. It is used as a hedge or ornamental plant. Its slightly glossy leaves are 5 to 10cm (2 to 3.9 in) long, oblong, ovate with pointed teeth, and are grey-green in the centre with wide margins of bright gold. Its flowering period from May to June produces pinkish-white flowers in umbels and occasional small berries that are reddish-brown, turning coral red when ripe.
Evergreen, tolerating temperatures down to -15°C, the 'Golden King' Holly thrives in partial shade. Plant it individually or as a hedge in a neutral pH, humus-rich, moist and light soil. Resistant to pollution and sea spray.
